Today’s Big Story…

The Trump administration revealed a suppressed investigative report from Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), which concluded with 80–95% certainty that COVID-19 originated from a lab accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

The secret report’s suppression was ordered by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2020, who believed the findings of the lab leak theory would help President Donald Trump’s reelection as he blamed China for the pandemic. The Trump administration has since cosigned on the report’s conclusions, further legitimizing its findings.

With Merkel facing backlash over her leftist policies over the years, this revelation will likely damage her legacy in Germany and beyond. It also reveals the deep consequences of not speaking out in an effort for transparency during a time of uncertainty, especially considering Germany’s sharp lockdown procedures.

Another Big Story…

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin visited the White House to meet President Trump for the annual St. Patrick’s Day tradition.

The visit, marked by the ceremonial presentation of a bowl of shamrocks, came amid tensions over trade and international conflicts. Trump criticized Ireland’s low corporate tax rates for attracting U.S. businesses, mentioning a “massive” trade imbalance he aims to address through reciprocal tariffs. Martin countered, emphasizing the mutual benefits of U.S.-Irish investment and Ireland’s role as a gateway to the EU.

They also touched on the Ukraine war, with Martin welcoming recent U.S. efforts toward a 30-day ceasefire. The Middle East, particularly Gaza, surfaced as a point of divergence—Martin advocated for humanitarian aid and a two-state solution, a popular European opinion. Despite underlying friction, the meeting maintained a cordial tone, though Trump did poke fun at VP Vance’s socks.

My Thoughts…

My ancestry stems from Ireland and Germany; I must say I find both modern-day countries disappointing. Let’s start with Merkel; I find it despicable that a prominent world leader had clear evidence of China’s negligence in leaking the coronavirus, and chose to bury the report to spite an “ally” from NATO because its citizens would likely vote Trump back in. What if Merkel released the report in 2020? The report may have impacted the U.S. election differently. Does she actually care about Germans and “global citizens,” or is it all about a phony legacy? Germany should do better with its leaders.

With Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner, and it’s important to celebrate Irish heritage. Unfortunately, Irish heritage is being systemically erased in its own country by uncontrolled mass migration of third-world migrants and visa abusers. In 2022, 20% of Ireland’s population were born outside the country. That statistic was only 10% in 2002.

The Administration…

  • A CNN poll released shows Americans are far happier with Trump’s economic leadership than they were under Biden. Trump now holds a 44% approval rating—higher than any score Biden has received since December 2021.

  • Border czar Tom Homan warned New York Gov. Kathy Hochul that federal agents could flood the state if she refuses to cooperate on immigration crackdowns.

  • Colombia reported a surge in Venezuelan migrants returning home and a decline in those heading to the U.S., attributing the shift to President Trump’s border policies. Between January and February, 9,353 Venezuelans entered Colombia from Panama, more than doubling last year’s 4,031.

  • Canada is striking back on the U.S. with the new announcement of 25% tariffs on $20 billion in U.S. goods. They will take effect Thursday.

  • HUD Secretary Scott Turner shared a video recounting his visit to Pacific Palisades and Altadena, areas devastated by the L.A. fires. He met with residents to assess needs and discuss HUD’s role in rebuilding efforts.

  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a department-wide review of military standards on fitness, body composition, and grooming, including beards.

  • Russia launched widespread missile and drone attacks on Ukraine after Kyiv signaled openness to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, raising doubts about Vladimir Putin’s interest in peace. The offensive targeted multiple Ukrainian cities.

  • The National Institutes of Health has canceled several grants through DOGE’s wasteful spending cuts. These include $620K for an LGB+ inclusive teen pregnancy prevention for transgender boys, $699K to study cannabis use among sexual minority gender-diverse individuals, and $740K to examine social networks among Black and Latino sexual minority men in New Jersey.

  • McLaurine Pinover, a senior Trump administration official overseeing federal layoffs under DOGE, was caught secretly filming fashion influencer videos in her government office. Pinover’s use of government resources for personal content raises ethical concerns amid widespread job cuts.

  • The Biden administration set up a fake White House stage for media appearances, featuring a digital Rose Garden backdrop that changed with the seasons. The set was used for speeches and video conferences. Trump attorney Alina Habba posted a video claiming she found the stage still intact, just as Biden's team left it.

Vice President…

JD Vance mocked CBS News, accusing its reporters of "harassing" his mother-in-law to attack President Trump’s stance on DEI policies. CBS ran a story on Lakshmi Chilukuri, a UC San Diego provost and Vance’s mother-in-law, for her work promoting DEI while Vance pushes to end it.

Vance responded: "I don't like DEI, and I'm proud of what our administration has done on that front. But I love my mother-in-law. If she doesn't share my views on DEI, I suppose I'll have to do what 99 percent of Americans do when confronted with a family member who doesn't always agree with them: get over it. This story exists because CBS has decided that harassing my mother-in-law is a reasonable price in order to attack President Trump."

Congress…

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said most Senate Democrats will oppose the House GOP's spending bill, likely triggering a partial government shutdown this weekend. With Republicans holding 53 seats, at least seven Democrats must back the bill to clear the 60-vote filibuster threshold, but support appears unlikely.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced a congressional investigation into attacks on Tesla vehicles and owners, linking them to backlash over Elon Musk’s role in Trump’s cost-cutting initiatives. Calling Musk’s efforts “heroic,” Johnson claimed that the "radical Left" is behind the attacks.

Johnson is also considering his response after a bipartisan push led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) secured 218 signatures to force a floor vote on allowing proxy voting for new parents, a measure Johnson calls “unconstitutional.” The effort, tied to Rep. Brittany Pettersen’s (D-Colo.) bill, sets the stage for a House vote.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) urged Mehmet Oz to commit to avoiding conflicts of interest ahead of his CMS confirmation hearing Friday. In a letter, she called on him to divest from health-related businesses, recuse himself from cases involving former employers, and pledge not to lobby CMS or related industries after leaving office.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire announced her retirement, becoming the latest Democrat to forgo re-election in 2026. The three-term senator and former governor’s departure complicates Democrats’ efforts to retake the Senate. Shaheen was the first woman elected as both governor and U.S. senator.

Ohio lawmakers are urging NASA’s headquarters to relocate from Washington, D.C., to Cleveland. In a letter to Vice President Vance and NASA nominee Jared Isaacman, they argued the move would boost efficiency, effectiveness, and fiscal responsibility.

The Resistance…

A new book alleges California Gov. Gavin Newsom secretly funded his own bronze bust inside San Francisco’s City Hall to commemorate his tenure as mayor. Newsom arranged for donations from private organizations, two of which were his own companies, each contributing $5,000 explicitly for the monument

Greenlanders rejected President Trump’s bid to control their mineral-rich island, voting to restore stability after weeks of controversy. The center-right Demokraatit party, which opposes U.S. influence, won first place in the election, marking a shift in Greenland’s political landscape.

Pro-Palestine protesters clashed with police outside NYC Mayor Adams' Gracie Mansion during an Iftar event, opposing his cooperation with ICE on deportations. They rallied for activist Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University protest leader, who was detained by ICE. A federal judge has temporarily halted his deportation.

A recent poll found that 14% of Americans now view Hamas—a U.S.-designated terrorist group—favorably, a notable increase from past years. The survey coincided with Trump’s crackdown on pro-Palestinian rioters. American views on Israel remain divided, with 50% expressing support and 19% holding negative opinions of the U.S. ally.

An Open the Books report found NASA strongly focused on DEI efforts. The agency funded anti-racist training, urged managers to practice allyship, and promoted underrepresented groups for advancement. The report coincides with the postponed SpaceX rescue mission, delayed due to technical issues.

A federal judge sharply criticized Justice Department lawyers over a retweet by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stating that transgender troops are disqualified from service “without an exemption.” Judge Ana Reyes, a Biden appointee, questioned the Pentagon's policy as trans rights groups push for an injunction to block the ban.

A federal judge temporarily blocked President Trump’s executive order targeting Perkins Coie, the law firm that represented Hillary Clinton. Judge Beryl Howell issued a restraining order, halting provisions that banned the firm’s attorneys from government buildings, restricted federal contact, and subjected its contracts to review. The ruling prevents the Trump administration from enforcing these measures while the case proceeds.

A Biden-appointed judge temporarily blocked the Department of Education from canceling $600 million in DEI-focused teacher training programs. Eight states, including California, New York, and Illinois, sued Education Secretary Linda McMahon, arguing the grants are critical for recruiting diverse, highly qualified teachers. The ruling halts the DOE’s decision while the case proceeds.

Serina Baker-Hill, a Michigan CBP director, has been charged with defrauding FEMA following 2023 flood damage to her home. The DOJ unsealed a complaint accusing the 55-year-old of fraud and lying to federal agents. A career CBP employee, she oversees the agency’s Automotive and Aerospace Engineering division.

In Non-Trump News…

Although we deliver you domestic and international news later this afternoon via the DML REPORT newsletter, here are a few worth mentioning now:

  1. Anthropic, an AI startup founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, focuses on developing advanced AI with substantial safety and alignment measures. Best known for creating Claude, a competitor to ChatGPT, the company prioritizes responsible AI innovation and research into AI alignment. Anthropic leverages partnerships to scale its operations and lead in ethical AI development.

  2. The measles outbreak in West Texas and New Mexico has infected over 250 people, with Texas reporting 223 cases, 29 hospitalizations, and the first U.S. measles death in a decade. The outbreak began in Gaines County, Texas, spreading to nearby counties and the local Mennonite community, known for low vaccination rates. New Mexico’s Lea County has reported 29 cases and a second suspected measles-related death, with officials concerned about further spread due to low adult vaccination rates. Beyond the region, isolated cases have emerged in 11 other states.

  3. Florida’s healthcare system absorbed $660 million in unpaid hospital bills from illegal migrants in 2024, according to a state report. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) noted that hospitals remain largely uncompensated, worsening strain on the state’s healthcare system. The costs, up from $566 million in 2023, reflect a full year of data tracking after legislation required reporting on migrant-related expenses.
