Today’s Big Story…

President Trump addressed the media reports concerning U.S. tariffs on Chinese high-tech products — Trump denied there are any exemptions. Over the weekend, on Truth Social, he wrote, “Nobody is getting ‘off the hook”, and singled out China. He confirmed that Chinese products remain under the existing fentanyl-related tariffs and have just been reassigned to a different category.

Customs and Border Protection announced a temporary exemption from Trump's reciprocal tariffs for smartphones, laptops, and other high-tech items originating from China. While the tech industry welcomed the move, Trump officials emphasized that the pause is part of a planned review of the national security risks of semiconductor imports.

Another Big Story…

President Trump “remains in excellent health,” according to White House physician Navy Capt. Sean P. Barbabella, following his annual physical at Walter Reed. The exam included lab tests and consultations with 14 specialists, confirming strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function. The report listed Trump’s vitals as 6'3" tall, 224 pounds, resting heart rate of 62, blood pressure 128/74, oxygen level at 99%, and a temperature of 98.6°F. No major issues were found, though the physician noted scarring on his right ear from a past gunshot wound.

Trump’s lifelong abstinence from tobacco and alcohol was highlighted in the report. He also takes four medications: Rosuvastatin and Ezetimibe for cholesterol, aspirin for heart health, and Mometasone cream for a skin condition. Neurological tests showed no signs of depression, anxiety, or cognitive issues. He scored a perfect 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA).

My Thoughts…

At near 80, to have a BP of 128/74 is incredible. Trump’s report makes him appear as an Olympian God compared to Sleepy Joe. Plus, we never did get that cognitive test from Biden.

The Administration…

  • The U.S. and Iran wrapped up a productive first round of indirect talks in Oman, agreeing to continue discussions this week. The talks focused on Iran’s nuclear program and threats of military action from Trump if no deal is reached.

  • Trump warned the Houthis it’s “time to hide,” claiming he removed Biden-era “dangerous red tape” to let U.S. troops defend Somalia from terrorists.

  • El Salvador President Nayib Bukele is visiting Trump at the White House today.

  • Sec of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that the U.S. had sent 10 members of two gangs — MS-13, Tren de Aragua — to El Salvador late Saturday.

  • The Trump administration doubled down on its assertion that a federal judge cannot force it to bring back to the U.S. an illegal alien — accused of being a gang member — who was deported to a prison in El Salvador last month.

  • Trump announced the U.S. military will take control of a 60-foot-wide strip of federal land along the southern border, spanning three states — California, New Mexico, and Arizona. The area, part of the Roosevelt Reservation, will be designated a “military installation” to help combat illegal immigration.

  • A federal judge upheld a Trump policy allowing ICE to conduct enforcement at places of worship. Judge Dabney Friedrich, a Trump appointee, rejected a challenge from Christian and Jewish groups seeking to block it.

  • Trump announced former Congressman Mark Walker of N. Carolina as the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.

  • Trump appointed William “Billy” Marshall III, head of West Virginia’s Corrections Division, as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

  • Trump has initiated a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against CBS, its news show '60 Minutes,' and its parent company Paramount, alleging fraudulent election interference through the manipulation of an interview with Kamala Harris during the 2024 Presidential Election.

  • The White House has replaced Barack Obama’s portrait with an iconic photo of President Trump taken after last summer’s failed assassination attempt.

  • National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said on CNN that the Trump administration is negotiating trade deals with 130 countries.

  • Following a lawsuit settlement, all 15 counties in Arizona have initiated the process of removing up to 50,000 non-citizens from their voter registration lists. This action stems from the enforcement of existing proof-of-citizenship voting laws. The process involves verifying and correcting voter rolls to ensure only eligible citizens participate in elections.

  • The U.S. military executed airstrikes on April 13, targeting the Al-Sawari Ceramics Factory in the Bani Matar District of Sana'a Governorate, Yemen. Meanwhile, the Yemeni Armed Forces, led by the Houthi group, have reportedly shot down another U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone in the Hajjah Governorate. This is the fourth drone incident in the last two weeks. Also, ballistic missiles were launched from Yemen by the Houthis, triggering air raid sirens across central Israel including Tel Aviv. The missiles prompted millions of Israelis to seek shelter during the Passover holiday.

  • The Trump administration has announced significant policy changes within the FDA and EPA to phase out animal testing for evaluating antibody therapies and other programs, a move praised by various animal rights groups.

Vice President…

JD Vance was singled out by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a 60 Minutes interview, saying there’s been “a shift in tone” and “a shift in reality” in the U.S., suggesting Russia’s narrative is influencing the Trump administration. Zelenskyy accused Vance of “somehow justifying Putin’s actions.”

Congress…

Congress adjourned without passing a bill to block major budget cuts for Washington, facing strong conservative resistance. The Senate passed it last month, but it’s stalled in the GOP-led House despite Trump’s support.

Trump criticized Senate Democrats on Truth Social for deliberately delaying his ambassador nominations, saying a process that should take minutes is being dragged out for months.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) dodged a question about a 2028 presidential run on Meet the Press, saying he's focused on “today” and his 2026 Senate reelection. He also said Congress has a responsibility to investigate whether any lawmakers engaged in possible insider trading before President Trump suddenly announced a 90-day pause on many of his global tariffs last week.

Trump said he’ll decide “at the right time” who to endorse in the upcoming Texas GOP Senate primary between Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

A conservative group has filed an FEC complaint against Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), alleging her campaign accepted improperly disclosed and potentially fraudulent donations via ActBlue.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has discussed reforms to Medicaid, aiming to eliminate ineligible recipients, particularly focusing on able-bodied adults, and to address significant fraud, waste, and abuse within the program. These reforms propose implementing work requirements for those deemed capable of working, with the goal to reallocate resources towards vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and the disabled.
