Today’s Big Story…

President Donald Trump unveiled his sweeping trade plan, dubbed "Liberation Day," during a White House Rose Garden speech, aiming to revive the "American Dream."

He announced reciprocal tariffs on all trading partners, effective immediately, with collections starting today to match duties imposed on U.S. goods. Trump argued these tariffs would level the playing field after decades of foreign nations exploiting American workers, targeting countries like China with a 20% rate and Canada with 25%. The policy follows earlier tariffs from his administration, including 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum imports, expanded in his second term. White House trade advisor Peter Navarro projected the tariffs would generate $600 billion annually, or $6 trillion over a decade, to fund tax cuts and reduce national debt.

Trump mentioned suffering industries—steel, auto, and farming—claiming companies are already returning to U.S. soil to avoid the levies, promising job growth. He cited historical precedent, noting that from 1789 to 1913, tariffs made the U.S. the world’s wealthiest nation, amassing so much revenue that officials once struggled to spend it. The "Make America Wealthy Again" event saw Trump sign an executive order for the tariffs, calling April 2 a historic turning point for American industry. He urged foreign nations to build factories in the U.S. to dodge duties, predicting a manufacturing boom.

Trump also dismissed short-term economic concerns, insisting long-term prosperity would follow. Leftists and critics, however, are sounding the alarm of potential price hikes and global trade tensions as markets brace for impact.

Another Big Story…

Politico reported that Elon Musk is expected to exit the Trump administration, but the White House dismissed the claim as “garbage.”

According to the Politico report, Trump told close advisers that Musk would retire from his role as a key government partner in the coming weeks. Per three anonymous insiders, Trump remains pleased with Musk’s efforts, but the two had reportedly agreed for Musk to return to his businesses and step away from DOGE imminently.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt debunked the report, writing on X: “This “scoop” is garbage. Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete.”

My Thoughts…

Liberation Day begins! Trump’s tariffs are hitting hard across the board. The impact will feel brutal at first, and some Republicans are already trying to pull shenanigans with attempts to rescind the tariffs on Canada, which has failed to stop the fentanyl crisis at the northern border. The Trump administration needs to hold firm, and constituents need to hold their senators accountable who are trying to fight against Trump’s tariff strategy.

Glad to see Musk is sticking around. DOGE is doing good work, and Musk’s presence alone rattles Democrats. While it’s been tough for Tesla stock, Musk’s mission to help fix the government spending issues needs to stay course for as long as possible!

The Administration…

  • Michigan union workers praised President Trump’s tariffs on foreign cars during his Rose Garden event, saying his economic nationalism will revive communities hurt by decades of free trade.

  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had a blunt message for countries eyeing retaliation over new U.S. tariffs: “Do not retaliate.”

  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and the MTA, accusing them of ignoring increasing subway safety risks.

  • Secretary of Education Linda McMahon crashed a press conference, surprising several House Democrats who had just met with her inside the Education Department. The lawmakers were holding the event outside to discuss the meeting—not expecting McMahon to show up.

  • The USDA announced a pause and review of federal funding to Maine after the state refused to follow President Trump’s order banning trans athletes from girls’ and women’s sports. Maine’s noncompliance triggered the funding freeze, fulfilling Trump’s earlier threat.

  • President Trump reached a settlement with law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher, avoiding sanctions after the firm agreed to provide $100 million in pro bono work for causes like veterans' support and fighting antisemitism. The firm, where Doug Emhoff once worked, is one of several recently settling with the Trump administration.

  • The Trump Justice Department has ordered federal prosecutors to drop the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The case has now been officially dismissed, clearing the way for Adams to campaign for a second term without the threat of jail.

  • Meta is urging the Trump administration to intervene against a pending EU antitrust fine over its “pay or consent” ad model. The European Commission ruled that the policy violates the Digital Markets Act, with a fine possibly exceeding $1 billion.

  • Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa revealed that he asked President Trump for U.S. military help to fight drug trafficking during a private meeting at Mar-a-Lago.

Vice President…

JD Vance posted on X following the crushing loss in Wisconsin, mentioning the challenge of mobilizing Republican voters for off-cycle elections, which often see lower turnout compared to presidential election years. He suggested the party should adopt strategies from Donald Trump’s successful campaigns, following the GOP establishment’s recent acceptance of Trump’s leadership.

Congress…

In a bipartisan move, 51 senators—including four Republicans—voted to end President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, marking the first major challenge to his trade policies. The vote came hours after Trump imposed new 10% tariffs on imports and reciprocal tariffs on goods from 60 countries. The resolution, led by Sen. Tim Kaine, aims to revoke Trump’s emergency order tied to fentanyl concerns.

President Trump signed an executive order requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, but top Democrats—including Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and the DNC—filed a lawsuit Monday in response, calling the order unconstitutional. Though Democrats claim noncitizens don’t vote in federal elections, they’ve united to block the measure.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized Rep.-elect Randy Fine after his special election win, saying he only won thanks to Trump’s support. DeSantis blamed the close race on Fine’s poor candidacy, accusing him of his past for pushing sanctuary state policies and trying to limit Second Amendment rights.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is calling on President Trump to return hundreds of suspected gang members deported to El Salvador last month.

Fox News host Martha MacCallum clashed with Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) over reports of waste and fraud uncovered by the DOGE. Coons expressed doubt about the findings, prompting visible frustration from MacCallum.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) mocked MAGA Republicans after Democrat-backed candidates won key Wisconsin races for the state Supreme Court and School Superintendent, highlighting their losses in the special election.

The Resistance…

  1. In a new book, top Biden aide Ron Klain admits the 82-year-old former president struggled with debate prep, often falling asleep by the pool and seeming confused at times. Klain even joked that Biden might think he was president of NATO, not the U.S.

  2. Former California AG and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra announced his 2026 gubernatorial bid, becoming the second Democrat in the California race. Becerra is known for suing President Trump over 120 times during his first term.

  3. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is reportedly releasing hundreds of inmates after firing thousands of correctional officers who went on strike over unsafe conditions.

  4. A federal judge in Maryland has blocked the Trump administration from firing probationary employees in 19 states. D.C. Judge James Bredar's order narrows an earlier nationwide pause that had reinstated nearly 24,000 workers fired.

  5. A Northern California judge ruled that the Trump administration must temporarily reinstate legal aid for unaccompanied migrant children, blocking a previous stop-work order.

  6. Colorado Democrats have introduced HB25-1312, a bill that would classify “misgendering” and “deadnaming” as forms of child abuse or “coercive control” in custody cases

  7. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is facing complaints of discrimination against white Americans in their scholarship and career programs. The American Alliance for Equal Rights (AAER) reported the Gates Foundation, the Lagrant Foundation, and the Creative Capital Foundation to the IRS, alleging intentional bias that could violate federal law and risk their tax-exempt status.

  8. Hunter Biden has agreed to be disbarred from practicing law in Washington, D.C., court records reveal. He filed a sealed affidavit consenting to disbarment following his June 2024 suspension after a felony conviction in Delaware.

  9. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is heading to Greenland for a three-day visit to strengthen ties amid U.S. efforts to gain influence in the Arctic. Her trip follows Vice President Vance’s recent visit, where he criticized Denmark for underinvesting in the region.
