Day 177
A new day for education
Today’s Big Story…
The Supreme Court allowed President Trump to resume his plan to dismantle the Education Department and lay off nearly 1,400 employees, pausing a lower court's injunction that had blocked the move.
The decision, opposed by the three liberal justices, overrides a ruling by Judge Myong Joun, who warned the layoffs would likely “cripple the department.” A federal appeals court had previously declined to halt Joun’s order during the appeal.
The Supreme Court’s decision allows the Trump administration to move forward with dismantling the Education Department, a key campaign promise. Education Secretary Linda McMahon praised the ruling on X, backing the president’s authority over staffing and operations at federal agencies.
Another Big Story…
President Trump told reporters he spoke with Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino in an effort to defuse controversy surrounding the Justice Department’s handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s death and the alleged involvement of his high-profile associates.
"Oh, I think so...I spoke to him today,” said Trump when asked if Bongino will stay in his role at the FBI. “[He is a] very good guy. I’ve known him a long time. I've done his show many, many times. He sounded terrific, actually."
Bongino appeals to Trump’s “MAGA” base, which remains skeptical of Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 death, officially ruled a suicide. A joint FBI-DOJ memo last week dismissed popular conspiracy theories about Epstein and his alleged clients. The findings drew backlash from conservative figures who accused Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel of falling short after months of promises to expose key names.
U.S. outlets reported that Bongino clashed with Bondi over the Epstein case and considered resigning from his position. Before joining the FBI, both Bongino and Director Patel had publicly claimed the government was concealing Epstein’s client list and related information.

The Administration…
President Trump said First Lady Melania convinced him that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly broken promises about a potential Ukraine peace deal, noting she raised the issue after his calls with Putin.
President Trump also warned he would impose severe tariffs on Russia, including a 100% secondary tariff on countries doing business with Moscow, if a Ukraine ceasefire isn’t reached within 50 days.
The Trump administration asked the courts to suspend a restraining order issued against ICE, which found its immigration enforcement in Los Angeles likely violated constitutional rights.
Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal agencies to begin eliminating non-English websites and materials, citing Trump’s order making English the official government language. She urged agencies to cut non-essential multilingual content and redirect savings to promote English use.
Attorney General Pam Bondi also fired senior DOJ ethics adviser Joseph Tirrell. Tirrell shared the news and a photo of his termination notice on LinkedIn, which gave no reason for the dismissal.
President Trump renewed his criticism of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, insisting interest rates should be 1% or lower.
President Trump and First Lady Melania will visit King Charles III this autumn. The king will host them at Windsor Castle.
Vice President…

Congress…
THE HOUSE
•Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) announced he will introduce a resolution calling for the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
•Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) raised $4 million in Q2, bringing her cash on hand to a record-breaking $11 million—the most ever for a New York Republican in an off-year quarter.
•Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL), new chair of the House Environment Subcommittee, introduced the SAMS Act to codify Trump-era orders boosting U.S. critical mineral production and reducing reliance on China.
THE SENATE
•The Senate has confirmed President Trump’s first judicial nominee of his second term, approving Whitney Hermandorfer for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
•Senate Majority Leader John Thune faces pushback from fellow Republicans this week over a House-passed plan to cut $9.4 billion from public broadcasting and global health programs, which some GOP senators, including Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, oppose.
•Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) praised President Trump for threatening tougher sanctions on Russia if President Putin doesn’t scale back attacks on Ukraine in the coming weeks.
The Resistance…
Despite years of investigations finding no proof of collusion, 60% of Democrats still believe President Trump’s 2016 campaign likely worked with Russia to steal the election, according to a new Rasmussen poll. Of those Democrats, 38% said it was “very likely” and 22% “somewhat likely,.”
At a private fundraiser in New Jersey, former President Barack Obama urged Democrats to take action against the direction of the country under President Trump. “Stop the whining and toughen up,” he said, calling on activists to stand up for their beliefs.
A new report says Joe Biden’s chief of staff approved several high-profile preemptive pardons in Biden’s final days, including for Anthony Fauci and Gen. Mark Milley. Trump has claimed the pardons are invalid, arguing Biden used an autopen and didn’t know what he was signing.
Hocus Pocus star Bette Midler launched a fiery rant, calling President Trump “mentally unfit to serve” and accusing him of ordering troops to “gas citizens and drag them to gulags.”
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) was subpoenaed over comments suggesting he housed an illegal alien. Sources say U.S. Attorney Alina Habba is investigating, and the FBI has interviewed at least four witnesses.
Assaults on ICE agents have surged nearly 700% since January, according to DHS officials, amid growing attacks from anarchist groups.
Stacey Abrams, former Democratic candidate for Georgia governor, said that protesting President Trump’s “illegal behavior” is “critical.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass praised a court-ordered pause on ICE raids, calling it a victory, though the temporary restraining order is expected to be overturned.
Democratic Minneapolis mayoral candidate Omar Fateh, the son of Somali immigrants, outlined his platform, calling for a rent freeze, a $20 minimum wage by 2028, and a ban on MPD cooperation with ICE. In a video on X, the state senator said his plan aims to protect the city from a "hostile White House." His platform mirrors that of NYC mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
China has revealed a mosquito-sized drone built for covert military and espionage missions, sparking concerns about its misuse. It’s designed to mimic a real mosquito.
