Today’s Big Story…

President Trump responded to reports that former CIA Director John Brennan and ex-FBI Director James Comey are under criminal investigation over the Trump–Russia probe, including alleged false statements by Brennan to Congress.

He was asked about the matter by Fox News' Peter Doocy during a meeting with African leaders at the White House, who presented the president with the question: “Do you want to see these two guys behind bars?

Trump answered: “I think they’re very dishonest people. I think they’re crooked as hell. And maybe they have to pay a price for that. I believe they are truly bad people and dishonest people. So whatever happens, happens."

The criminal investigation into Brennan is underway following a referral from current CIA Director John Ratcliffe. However, details remain limited, and the scope, beyond alleged false statements to Congress, is unclear. DOJ sources also confirmed an ongoing probe into Comey but did not specify what is being investigated. Some sources have described the FBI’s view of Brennan and Comey’s actions as a possible “conspiracy,” suggesting broader prosecutorial possibilities.

The Brennan investigation follows Ratcliffe’s declassification of a “lessons learned” review of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which claimed Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump. The review found the ICA process was rushed, deviated from intelligence standards, and included the discredited Steele Dossier—undermining a key judgment. It also marked the first time career CIA officials acknowledged the process was politicized, especially by Obama-era appointees.

Another Big Story…

President Trump hinted at a potential 200% tariff on foreign pharmaceutical companies, reviving his push to bring drug manufacturing back to the U.S. While he’s previously held off, he suggested the tariffs could take effect within 18 months.

We’ll be announcing something very soon on pharmaceuticals. We’re gonna give people about a year, year and a half to come in, and after that, they’re gonna be tariffed if they have to bring the pharmaceuticals into the country at a very high rate, like 200%,” Trump said. “We’ll give them a certain period of time to get their act together.

Additionally, President Trump announced a planned 50% tariff on Brazil, citing the country's treatment of former President and ally Jair Bolsonaro. In a Truth Social post, Trump called Brazil’s actions under President Lula “an international disgrace.”

The Administration…

  • President Trump praised the IRS for allowing churches to endorse political candidates, stating that he appreciates their ability to do so. He added that he respects church leaders and supports their right to make political endorsements if they choose.

  • The Trump administration secured a legal win as a federal judge allowed the DOJ to rescind nearly $800 million in grants for crime victim and violence reduction programs. Judge Amit Mehta denied an injunction sought by five groups and dismissed the case.

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, marking their second in-person meeting following talks in Saudi Arabia in February.

  • Rubio also announced U.S. sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian rights, calling her actions against the U.S. and Israel unacceptable.

  • President Trump announced that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will be the interim head of NASA.

  • Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the Trump administration will resume interest payments on student loans for nearly 8 million borrowers, blaming the Biden administration for leaving them in legal limbo with failed loan forgiveness promises.

  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, a potential candidate to replace Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has increasingly criticized the Fed’s policies, breaking with the usual norm of noninterference. He argues the Fed has been too slow to cut interest rates and underestimates the inflationary impact of tariffs.

  • The Labor Department launched a training program to boost women’s participation in skilled apprenticeships. Aiming to fill high-paying jobs in cybersecurity, construction, and manufacturing, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer emphasized the need for more women in U.S. industries.

  • White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles called President Trump’s rift with Elon Musk “very troublesome” but ultimately just a “little hiccup” on the latest Pod Force One episode. She commented that Musk had a “fatherly fixation” on Trump that was bound to implode.

Vice President…

JD Vance criticized NYC socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of insulting the U.S. on its “most sacred day.” Speaking at the Claremont Institute’s Statesmanship Award Dinner, Vance noted that Mamdani had never seriously acknowledged Independence Day and only did so this year to criticize it.

Congress…

THE HOUSE

Former White House physician Kevin O’Connor’s interview with the House Oversight Committee ended in under an hour after he repeatedly pleaded the Fifth, offering no new information about his time with former President Biden.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) signaled he may allow a vote on a Russia sanctions bill tied to the Ukraine conflict.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said she will oppose further aid to Israel, citing foreign funding in the National Defense Authorization Act as a reason she can’t support the bill.

THE SENATE

The Senate voted 53-43 to confirm Bryan Bedford, former Republic Airways CEO, as head of the FAA. Nominated by President Trump, Bedford recently stepped down after 25 years leading the airline. He will serve a five-year term and oversee $12.5 billion to modernize U.S. air traffic control.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) blamed President Trump for the deadly Texas flash floods, claiming his attacks on public workers like meteorologists had consequences. NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo called the comment “a cheap shot,” accusing Murphy of using tragedy for political gain.

Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) has hired Matthew Arbo—an anti-Trump, pro-illegal immigration, pro-COVID mandate, climate change-focused, anti-Second Amendment, and Critical Race Theory-supporting academic—as his senior adviser. Arbo now leads the Values Action Team (VAT), a coalition of conservative lawmakers and staff.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) claimed that President Trump’s advisers are “amateurs” who try to mimic him when he’s not around.

The Resistance…

  1. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to provide aid to illegal aliens impacted by local ICE raids.

  2. Noncitizens with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) are suing President Trump’s DHS, accusing him and Secretary Kristi Noem of racism after Noem ended TPS for individuals from Honduras, Nicaragua, and Nepal.

  3. Border Patrol agents arrested four people in Los Angeles for allegedly placing tire spikes to obstruct federal immigration vehicles. Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino said the suspects were charged with interfering with immigration enforcement operations.

  4. New Massachusetts legislation would ban immigration and law enforcement officers, including ICE agents, from wearing masks on duty. Filed by State Rep. Jim Hawkins, the bill aims to prevent officials from concealing their identities during enforcement actions.

  5. The Supreme Court denied Florida’s emergency request to enforce a controversial immigration law banning illegal aliens from entering the state, leaving a lower court’s pause in place. The 6-3 conservative-majority court gave no explanation, and no dissents were noted.

  6. A federal judge has ordered Caroline Wren, a GOP fundraiser and Jan. 6 rally organizer, to pay $2,000 per day for ignoring a civil subpoena related to her role as a liaison between the Trump White House and rally participants.

  7. Six Secret Service agents have been suspended without pay for 10 to 42 days over failures during last year’s assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler, Pa. They won’t be fired but will return to reduced roles.

  8. Microsoft is laying off around 9,000 employees after recently applying to fill thousands of foreign worker positions, according to a review of Labor Department data.

  9. Linda Yaccarino announced on X that she is stepping down as the platform’s CEO.

  10. College articles by NYC socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reveal his early views, including support for an anti-Israel academic boycott and concerns about white privilege. Between 2010 and 2014, Mamdani wrote 32 pieces for Bowdoin College’s student paper.

In Other News…

  1. A 76-year-old grandmother, Yuet Kiu Cheung, was killed on July 4th when an e-bike battery exploded like a “blowtorch” inside a Queens pizzeria, trapping her as she tried to exit the bathroom. The FDNY said it was the city’s first fatal fire linked to lithium-ion batteries this year. Read more…
