Day 170
A questionable conclusion...
Today’s Big Story…
President Trump defended the FBI on Truth Social after backlash from his MAGA base over Attorney General Pam Bondi’s closure of the Jeffrey Epstein case, which she said had no “client list” to release.
According to Trump, the FBI is now going “back to the basics” by focusing on street-level crime, writing in part: "We have the Greatest Law Enforcement professionals in the World, but “Politics” and Corrupt Leadership often prevented them from doing their job. That is no longer the case, and now, they have been unleashed to do their jobs, and they are doing just that."
The Epstein files have been a key issue in President Trump’s second term. While the administration promised transparency and vowed to release them, the files remain sealed. The FBI also recently ruled Epstein’s death a suicide with no foul play, prompting large swaths of skepticism. MAGA supporters directed their anger at FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, who had previously spoken out about Epstein as private citizens but now endorse the DOJ and FBI’s conclusion that no client list exists.
The DOJ released nearly 11 hours of surveillance footage to support its finding that Epstein died by suicide in his NYC prison cell in 2019. The video shows no one entering or exiting the area outside his cell, but does not show the actual inside of Epstein’s cell. Critics noted a suspicious one-minute timestamp jump at midnight on August 10, visible in both the original and FBI-enhanced versions, which fueled further skepticism about the video's authenticity, including from Elon Musk.
Still, the DOJ is maintaining this is the conclusion of the Epstein case, writing in their released memo: “After a thorough investigation, FBI investigators concluded that Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on August 10, 2019. This conclusion is consistent with previous findings.”
What’s the time? Oh look, it’s no-one-has-been-arrested-o’clock again …

Another Big Story…
President Trump escalated trade pressure by sending letters to several world leaders announcing new “reciprocal” tariff rates, some of which are higher or lower than the April levels.
However, he eased the rollout by signing an executive action delaying all such tariffs—except those on China—until August 1. Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung were the first to receive the notices.
Trump also confirmed similar letters were sent to Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar, and Laos, with some tariff rates as high as 40%. Additionally, he revealed seven more letters—sent to Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (set for a 30% tariff), Indonesia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, and Thailand—bringing the total to 14 countries. In all the letters, Trump cited U.S. trade deficits and foreign policies he says hinder American exports. He urged the countries to avoid tariffs by manufacturing goods in the U.S.
The letters come ahead of Trump’s July 9 deadline for countries to strike trade deals or face higher tariffs. That date ends a pause on “reciprocal” tariffs, which have imposed a minimum 10% rate since April. In all 14 letters, Trump warned that any retaliatory tariffs would trigger even steeper U.S. tariffs beyond the listed rates. The White House clarified that these would be separate from existing sector-specific tariffs, such as the current 25% auto tariff, and would also apply to any future sectoral measures.

President Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House as protesters rallied against the meeting both outside and in Tel Aviv.
Speaking alongside Netanyahu, President Trump said he supports lasting peace with Iran but is “ready, willing, and able” to strike if threatened. He added that talks with Iran could happen within a week and warned of further military action if needed.

•Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) said Democratic voters are demanding action, as frustration grows over the party’s inability to counter Trump’s agenda. House Democrats are hearing red-hot anger from their base, with some even warning of potential “violence” and a growing disregard for legal limits on power.
•Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) said Democrats should take a hard look at their failures on border security and messaging, noting, “When the most Latino district outside Puerto Rico votes for Trump, that should be a wake-up call.”
THE SENATE
•Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is urging the Commerce Department’s inspector general to investigate whether staffing shortages at National Weather Service offices worsened the deadly flash flooding in Texas. In a letter, he called for an immediate probe into the impact of these vacancies.
The Resistance…

A federal judge rejected the DOJ’s attempt to dismiss Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s lawsuit over his mistaken deportation to El Salvador, calling one motion “meritless.” She has yet to rule on his request to be transferred to federal custody in Maryland ahead of his human trafficking trial in Tennessee.

Your Opinions & Questions…
Sciani: ”I believed a third party could make things right. I voted for Perot. We know how that turned out. Are the supporters of a third party too young to remember what happened as a result? We still see minor party attraction eating into conservative candidate support. A really strong 3rd party will devastate conservative influence.”
47 Report: A third-party introduction to a dominant two-party system will have massive consequences. Unfortunately, as you point out, it will likely hurt conservatives and the GOP if Musk gets the America Party involved by the next midterms.
MustangPrincess3: “Why can't they just make good movies for entertainment as they were meant to be, anymore?! They have to take good stories and ruin them! I grew up with Superman as my childhood hero and was going to go see the new one in theaters but not anymore. I didn't see Batman vs Superman either. If I do watch it once it's streaming, I'll do so with the mindset of a corrupt evil people fighting against the good that's trying to save them. Even in Man of Steel and The Dark Knight they had this conflict without making it about race and politics. <Shaking my head in disgust>”
47 Report: Agreed. Plus, the new Superman looks downright terrible in terms of quality, to be frank. We are far away from the Christopher Reeve days.
