Day 168
On Sundays, 47 Report takes a break from its normal format to delve into a single topic of significance. Today's focus is the creation of a third political party.
The America Party
Elon is ready to go to war.
Elon Musk, the guy who’s got rockets landing like sci-fi flicks and cars driving themselves, just dropped a bombshell: he’s launching the “America Party.” Why? He says it’s because he’s fed up with the Democrat-Republican “uniparty” fleecing our country with waste and backroom deals. The Wall Street Journal says differently. In short, they believe it’s because “Elon Musk’s clash with Donald Trump over the “Big, Beautiful Bill” ended in defeat, and he’s seething. The Wall Street Journal opines that Musk, despite his wealth and influence, miscalculated by betting on his sway over MAGA voters. His threats to fund primary challenges against bill-supporting Republicans fizzled—Trump’s base proved loyal. Musk’s angst stems from a bruised ego and policy losses, like the bill’s EV subsidy cuts hitting Tesla. His America Party push is a desperate bid to reclaim clout, but the Journal suggests he underestimated Trump’s political grip and overestimated his own”
I’ve always been a fan of a third party, dating all the way back to Ross Perot running as an Independent. Trump aside, everyone else has sucked. Meaning, I’m done picking between clowns like George Bush and Al Gore. We deserve better than this rigged game.
HOW DID WE GET HERE
Musk kicked this off with a July 4 X poll, asking if folks wanted a new party to break the two-party chokehold. Over 1.2 million voted, with 65.4% screaming “Yes!” He doubled down on X, posting, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Musk continues to repeat that this is not revenge again Trump. He points to the uniparty’s “waste & graft”, and how it is bankrupting us. He’s got a point—both sides love their pet projects while the debt skyrockets.
Musk’s plan is sharp, not scattershot, and you can never bet against Musk. But then again, never bet against Trump. Regardless, on X, Musk said the America Party will zero in on “2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts” to act as a “deciding vote” on divisive laws. It’s like a sniper, not a shotgun—targeting key races to flip the script.
CAN IT WORK?
Supporters are fired up, especially his X fanbase of techies and liberty lovers. A Quantus Insights poll showed 40% of Americans, mostly male Republicans, would back him. But not everyone’s on board. Some GOP bigwigs worry Musk’s splitting the vote, handing Dems a win in 2026. Trump himself shrugged it off, saying Musk’s just salty over policy spats.
Here’s the rub: ballot access is a nightmare. Each state’s got its own rules, a patchwork mess designed to keep outsiders out. In New York, a new party needs 45,000 signatures, including 500 from half the congressional districts. California demands 1% of voters register with the party or a candidate hits 2% in a statewide race. Texas wants 83,000 signatures for independents, but parties need less—if you navigate the red tape. Some states, like Maine, even force voters to switch party registration. Musk’s got no FEC registration yet, no grassroots machine, and tight deadlines. Musk’s got the cash and the megaphone, but this is a steep climb. If he pulls it off, he could rewrite the game. I’m rooting for him to give us a real choice.
