Today’s Big Story…

A new eyebrow-raising CIA review claims the 2016 intelligence assessment on Russian election interference was compromised by then-CIA Director John Brennan, FBI Director James Comey, and DNI James Clapper.

According to the report, the trio was “excessively involved” in drafting the assessment, which was rushed through a “chaotic,” “atypical,” and “markedly unconventional” process that raised concerns of a “potential political motive.” The review, conducted by CIA career analysts and commissioned by Director John Ratcliffe, found that former President Obama ordered the assessment on December 6, 2016, just weeks before leaving office. The final report concluded that Vladimir Putin “aspired” to help Donald Trump win the election.

Central to the controversy was the inclusion of the Steele Dossier, which FBI leaders insisted on adding over strong objections from senior CIA analysts. Critics warned the Dossier lacked basic tradecraft standards and its inclusion would “undermine the credibility” of the entire report. Despite these warnings, Brennan supported its inclusion, favoring its alignment with existing theories over its reliability. The Dossier was formally placed in an annex with a disclaimer, but a reference to it was still included in the main text.

This effectively gave the unverified material the appearance of supporting evidence for the judgment about Putin’s intentions. Analysts concluded that this decision weakened the report’s overall analytical integrity.

Another Big Story…

Meanwhile, former President Obama urged Americans to call their representatives and oppose President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” in Congress.

On X, Obama wrote the following: “More than 16 million Americans are at risk of losing their health care because Republicans in Congress are rushing to pass a bill that would cut federal funding for Medicaid and weaken the Affordable Care Act. If the House passes this bill, it will increase costs and hurt working class families for generations to come. Call your representative today and tell them to vote no on this bill.

The bill narrowly passed the Senate through a tie-breaking vote by Vice President Vance and is now back in the House for reconsideration after Senate revisions.

The Administration…

  1. President Trump announced a new trade deal with Vietnam, imposing a 20% tariff on Vietnamese goods, 40% on transshipped products, and granting U.S. exports tariff-free access.

  2. In a new escalation of his feud with Fed Chair Jerome Powell, President Trump called for Powell’s resignation after the FHFA chief accused him of giving "deceptive" testimony to Congress. Trump has long criticized Powell for not cutting interest rates, claiming it's costing the U.S. a "fortune."

  3. Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem announced that Border Patrol recorded just 25,243 encounters in June—the lowest in U.S. history. She noted this is 12% lower than the previous record set under Trump in February 2025.

  4. During Trump’s second term, business owners in Nogales, Mexico, say drug trafficking has declined and the area feels calmer.

  5. The Department of Agriculture plans to release millions of sterilized flies over Texas and Mexico by air to combat the flesh-eating larvae of the New World Screwworm. The flies will be irradiated adult males, bred specifically for this pest-control effort.

  6. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has paused a missile and ammo shipment to Ukraine over concerns about U.S. military stockpiles.

  7. After months of backlash, President Trump scored a win as the Colorado Capitol replaced a controversial portrait he said was “purposely distorted.” A new portrait, donated by the White House, was installed last week.

  8. Stocks mostly rose yesterday as investors focused on trade and the upcoming June jobs report. The S&P 500 hit a record high, gaining 0.47%, while the Nasdaq climbed 0.94%.

  9. Amid rising Middle East tensions, federal and local officials are boosting security for 4th of July events. DHS raised the threat level to “heightened” after U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

  10. President Trump will attend a special Independence Day kickoff event tonight at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, starting at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Vice President…

JD Vance is set to visit Rapid City, South Dakota, as part of his family’s Fourth of July celebrations.

Congress…

THE HOUSE

Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH), who opposed the House GOP’s version of Trump’s megabill in May, said he now supports the Senate-passed version.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized the $25,000 cap on the “no tax on tips” provision in the Senate-passed version of Trump’s spending and tax bill.

Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) warned that Trump’s GOP-backed megabill would hurt gamblers by capping deductions at 90%. Under the Senate version, someone who wins and loses $100,000 would still owe $10,000 in taxes despite breaking even.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) defended her Instagram post calling ICE a "terrorist force" during a CNN interview. She wrote that ICE is "kidnapping" people of all legal statuses, including U.S. citizens.

THE SENATE

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) criticized Paramount Global for agreeing to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit brought by President Trump. The settlement comes as Paramount seeks approval from Trump’s regulators for a multibillion-dollar merger with Skydance.

The Resistance…

  1. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, joined by U2’s Bono, visited USAID employees to offer support and criticize President Trump for shutting down the agency amid fraud allegations. Obama called the move "a colossal mistake.”

  2. Fears over ICE enforcement led several Los Angeles-area municipalities to cancel July 4 celebrations, claiming safety concerns. Still, hundreds gathered in the city for a “Sick-of-ICE, Sick-of-Trump” protest.

  3. ICE released a mugshot of a Liberian-born U.S. citizen who worked for USCIS and was charged with taking bribes to help illegal aliens obtain special benefits. A press release says he had been accepting bribes since at least 2015, during the Obama administration.

  4. A federal judge in Oregon ordered the immediate release of a 24-year-old Mexican illegal alien arrested at Portland Immigration Court. Judge Michael H. Simon ruled that ICE officers detained him unlawfully and without justification.

  5. A federal judge blocked President Trump’s executive order aimed at denying asylum and withholding removal of illegal aliens who cross the border illegally. Judge Randolph Moss ruled the order exceeded Trump’s authority to suspend those legal protections.

  6. A federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s plan to end Temporary Protected Status for over 520,000 Haitian illegal aliens. U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan ruled DHS Secretary Kristi Noem failed to follow the required timeline and procedures set by Congress.

  7. America First Legal, a conservative group co-founded by Trump adviser Stephen Miller, announced that it filed a lawsuit against a Biden administration program that allegedly considered race in approving organ donations.

  8. Celebrity drag queen Pattie Gonia ended Pride Month with a vulgar message for President Trump during the Denver Pride march. Speaking to a cheering crowd, Gonia declared, “The muzzle doesn’t work on us, bitch,” followed by political slogans including “Black Lives Still Matter,” and “Free Palestine.”

  9. Wisconsin’s Supreme Court ruled 4-3 to strike down an 1849 law that banned nearly all abortions, ensuring continued access to abortion-related procedures.

  10. A recent UC Irvine poll shows former Vice President Kamala Harris leading California’s potential gubernatorial race, with 41% support compared to 29% for a generic Republican candidate.
