Day 160
SCOTUS hands Trump some wins
Today’s Big Story…
The Supreme Court delivered a key victory to President Trump, ruling 6-3 to restrict the use of universal injunctions by federal district judges.
These broad rulings had previously blocked many of Trump's executive actions from taking effect nationwide. The Court held that such injunctions should be used only in exceptional circumstances. Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.
The case stemmed from a set of legal challenges to Trump's proposed ban on birthright citizenship. Federal judges in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington had each issued nationwide injunctions preventing the policy from being implemented across the country. The Trump administration argued those rulings were too sweeping and exceeded the judges’ authority.
While the Supreme Court agreed to hear the consolidated cases earlier this year, the justices sidestepped the constitutional question at the heart of the dispute—whether Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship itself is lawful. Instead, during May’s arguments and in yesterday’s ruling, the Court focused solely on the scope of judicial power to issue nationwide blocks. The ruling instructs the lower courts to swiftly revise their injunctions to comply with the new limitations and align with traditional principles of equity. It also pauses enforcement of the birthright citizenship orders for 30 days, giving the lower courts time to act.
The Supreme Court has curtailed the power of district judges to issue nationwide injunctions, allowing President Trump’s executive order overturning birthright citizenship to take effect in 30 days.

Another Big Story…
Additionally, the Supreme Court ruled that illegal aliens have a 30-day window to challenge deportation orders once a final removal decision is issued.
The 5-4 decision came in a case involving a Jamaican national seeking to avoid deportation. The three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Neil Gorsuch joining much of their reasoning.
Pierre Riley, a Jamaican national, challenged his deportation under the Convention Against Torture, claiming a drug kingpin’s threats put his life at risk if returned to Jamaica. Although he followed legal procedures and appealed through the immigration court system, the appellate court dismissed his case, citing that more than a year had passed since his original removal order. Riley overstayed a visa decades ago and was deported in 2021 after serving time for drug felonies.

Both House and Senate budget bills propose expanding the child tax credit, with the House offering a larger benefit. Currently, families earning up to $200,000 can claim $2,000 per child through 2025. Without new legislation, the credit will drop to $1,000 after the 2017 tax law expires.
A provision in President Trump’s "big, beautiful bill" to ease regulations on certain firearms was removed after the Senate parliamentarian ruled it violated chamber rules. The measure would have delisted short-barrel rifles, shotguns, and suppressors from the National Firearms Act.

Comedian podcast host Andrew Schulz accused Kamala Harris’s campaign of “blatantly” lying about his team not reaching out during the 2024 election. Schulz said he tried to book Democrats like Gov. Tim Walz and Pete Buttigieg for his show Flagrant, but was rejected and labeled by some as part of a “sexist, bigoted, and racist” group of “podcast bros.”
A new Emerson College poll shows Kamala Harris falling sharply in the 2028 race, dropping from 37% after the 2024 election to 13% this month. Pete Buttigieg now leads at 16%, followed by Gavin Newsom at 12%, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Josh Shapiro tied at 7%.
