Day 156
The unexpected ceasefire; will it last?
Today’s Big Story…
President Trump unexpectedly announced that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire, claiming it will end the war, which he has dubbed “The 12-Day War.”
His statement came one hour after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei posted on X, declaring that “the Iranian nation isn’t a nation that surrenders.” This also comes after Iran had launched around a dozen missiles at the Al Udeid U.S. Air Force base in Qatar following the U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. Nearly all the missiles were intercepted, with no injuries or major damage reported. At least 10 missiles targeted Qatar, and one was launched toward Iraq. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the attack, stating the number of missiles matched the U.S. bombs used.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said its air defenses “thwarted the attack,” and condemned it as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty and international law. The ministry warned Qatar reserves the right to respond proportionally. Al Udeid, the largest U.S. air base in the Middle East with about 10,000 troops, had reportedly been mostly evacuated in recent days amid fears of Iranian retaliation.
Another Big Story…
The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, allowed the Trump administration to resume deporting convicted criminals to third countries with which they have no ties.
In a brief, unsigned order, the court paused a lower court ruling that had required giving illegal aliens a chance to argue they faced persecution if deported under U.S. deals with countries like South Sudan. The decision allows the administration to move forward with rapid removals, although individuals can still attempt to file personal claims.
The ruling, a major win for the Trump administration, occurred on Justice Clarence Thomas’s birthday.
Happy Birthday to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas — a steadfast defender of our Constitution and the rule of law. 🇺🇸

The Administration…
The Trump administration announced a final rule shortening ObamaCare’s open enrollment period and ending coverage for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children. The new enrollment window will run from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, instead of Jan. 15.
Oil prices fell after Iran’s attack on a U.S. base in Qatar caused no casualties. Prices had earlier spiked 6% when Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for 20% of global oil supply.
Trump pushed back against media claims that the U.S. airstrikes on Iran were ineffective, saying the targeted sites were “totally destroyed.” He singled out CNN’s Allison Cooper, NBC’s parent company chairman Brian Roberts, ABC’s Jon Karl, and others, accusing them of spreading falsehoods.
President Trump also responded to a Russian politician’s threat to supply Iran with nuclear weapons, questioning whether former President Medvedev really made the claim.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, questioned at a House budget hearing, said she was unsure how many Iranian nationals in the U.S. had been convicted of crimes but noted that over 1,000 entered illegally during the Biden administration.
Former Clinton-era National Security Council staffer Jamie Metzl praised President Trump’s strikes on Iran, saying they showed bold leadership. Metzl, who founded One Shared World, added that Kamala Harris likely would have lacked the “courage” to carry out such an operation.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, a frequent Trump critic, also defended the president’s bombing of Iran, saying Hillary Clinton and past presidents would have done the same.
Exiled Iranian prince Reza Pahlavi, son of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, has proposed leading a democratic transition to replace the Islamic Republic. Speaking from Paris, he called it “our Berlin Wall moment.”
Federal Reserve Vice Chair Michelle Bowman, appointed by Trump as the top bank overseer, said rate cuts may be near, citing rising job market risks and downplaying concerns about inflation from tariffs.
Vice President…
JD Vance told Bret Baier on Fox News that he believes the U.S. airstrikes buried Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, though some officials fear it was moved before the attacks.
“Our goal was to bury the uranium, and I do think the uranium is buried, but our goal was to eliminate the enrichment and eliminate their ability to convert that enriched fuel into a nuclear weapon,” Vance said, referring to the estimated 400kg of uranium enriched to 60% purity.
Congress…
THE HOUSE
•House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he requested a briefing on Iran but has yet to receive one, accusing the Trump administration of withholding information from Congress. The White House denied this, calling Democrats' claims false.
•Twelve House Democrats who are military veterans signed a letter to President Trump backing a war powers resolution following the U.S. strikes on Iran. Signatories include Reps. Pat Ryan, Gil Cisneros, Eugene Vindman, Chris Deluzio, Bobby Scott, Jimmy Panetta, Derek Tran, Herb Conaway, Chrissy Houlahan, Maggie Goodlander, Salud Carbajal, and Ted Lieu.
•Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a staunch Trump ally, has broken with him over the U.S. airstrikes on Iran. Opposed to involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, she issued a strong statement on X condemning the strikes.
THE SENATE
•The Senate parliamentarian ruled that a GOP effort to limit federal judges’ power to block Trump administration policies with injunctions cannot be included in Trump’s tax and spending bill. The decision is another setback for Republicans using the budget reconciliation process for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
•Republican senators remain concerned about deep Medicaid cuts in the GOP’s megabill tied to Trump’s agenda, casting doubt on whether it has enough votes to pass. They warn the cuts could harm rural hospitals and reduce coverage, and say leadership has yet to offer a plan they can support.
•Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized Trump’s preemptive strikes on Iran, asserting that only Congress has the authority to declare war.
•Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) rejected Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s call to impeach President Trump over the Iran airstrikes, stating the idea “isn’t going anywhere.”
The Resistance…
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites as “unjustified,” warning they push the world toward greater danger. He pledged to support the Iranian people.
Pakistan condemned President Trump’s strikes on Iranian nuclear sites just a day after praising him for helping defuse a crisis with India. Pakistan credited Trump’s leadership for brokering a truce following deadly violence in Kashmir that nearly led to war between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
According to CNN, Iran has rejected reports of a ceasefire with Israel, saying it received no such proposal after President Trump’s announcement. A senior Iranian official claimed that Iran will fight until “lasting peace” is achieved and dismissed U.S. and Israeli statements as “deception.”
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department faced backlash after posting a controversial message expressing sympathy for victims of the Iran bombings.
Georgetown professor Jonathan A.C. Brown said he hopes Iran develops a bomb following the U.S. strikes on its nuclear program.
Anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil returned to Columbia University to lead a protest march, days after his release from immigration detention by court order. In New York City, he spoke about the Trump administration's attempt to deport him.
ICE uncovered a “massive identity theft” scheme involving over 100 American victims at Glenn Valley Foods in Omaha, Nebraska. A recent raid found more than 70 illegal aliens working at the meatpacking plant.
A federal judge in Tennessee denied a request to keep Salvadoran illegal alien Kilmar Abrego Garcia in detention during his criminal case. Abrego Garcia was deported before being returned to face charges of trafficking migrants. He remains in custody pending a hearing on release conditions.
Jeff Bezos’s Washington Post published an article praising Spain’s migration policy for boosting the economy, while downplaying the impact of mass migration on citizens’ living standards. The piece promoted the benefits of importing cheap labor, consumers, and renters from South America.
