Day 153
Many voices, but who is right & who is wrong?
Today’s Big Story…
President Trump said to reporters again that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is wrong about Iran’s nuclear threat. When asked for evidence, he replied, “Then my intelligence community is wrong... Tulsi Gabbard, she’s wrong.”
Trump reiterated his belief that Iran is close to developing a nuclear weapon, saying it could happen within weeks or months. His stance contrasts with U.S. intelligence leaders, though he maintains that preventing a nuclear-armed Iran is a top priority.
The comments come amid rising tensions and increased Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Trump also said he’s not asking Israel to stop its military campaign against Iran, despite pressure from Tehran. When asked by reporters if he’d request a halt for potential talks, he replied: “Well, I think it's very hard to make that request right now. Somebody is winning. It's a little bit harder to do that if somebody is losing.”

Another Big Story…
The Trump administration issued layoff notices to over 600 employees at Voice of America, a U.S.-funded news outlet that delivers reporting to regions with restricted press freedom, but is known to lean into political propaganda.
A major reason for the decision stems from political bias on VoA’s part. In March, Trump accused VoA of spreading “anti-American” propaganda and called it “the voice of radical America.” He later signed an executive order to dismantle the agency, placing most of its reporters on paid leave.
The layoffs will cut VoA's staff to under 200, about one-seventh of its early 2025 workforce. Affected employees will remain on paid leave until their official release on September 1. Trump’s pick to run the VoA, Kari Lake, had deemed the organization “unsalvageable.”

Weekend Reports
Vice President JD Vance will visit Los Angeles this weekend, a hotspot for protests against the Trump administration’s immigration policies. He’ll deliver remarks, tour federal facilities, and meet with Marines.
White House “border czar” Tom Homan said immigration raids under the Trump administration will continue at sites like farms and hotels, with a focus on criminal offenders. He added that sanctuary cities will be prioritized for enforcement due to their release of public safety threats.
The Ninth Circuit Court unanimously ruled that President Trump can retain control of National Guard troops deployed to Los Angeles, blocking a lower court order returning authority to Gov. Gavin Newsom. It marks the first such presidential deployment without a governor’s consent since 1965.
A federal judge blocked the Trump administration from requiring 20 mostly Democratic states to cooperate with ICE to receive transportation funding. Judge John McConnell issued a preliminary injunction, ruling the policy unconstitutional while the lawsuit proceeds.
A federal judge in New Jersey ordered the release of Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil from ICE detention as his immigration case proceeds. Judge Michael Farbiarz ruled Khalil, a green card holder detained by Trump’s ICE, is not a threat or flight risk and called his detention “highly unusual.”
Elon Musk slammed Trump aide Sergio Gor, calling him “a snake” after a report revealed Gor hadn’t filed paperwork for a permanent security clearance. Musk blames Gor for fueling a feud with Trump by allegedly convincing the president to withdraw NASA nominee Jared Isaacman, a friend of Musk, over past Democratic donations.
Iran claimed it moved all nuclear material to a “safe place” before Israeli missile strikes. This comes after President Trump demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and threatened airstrikes, but stepped back as Britain readied for peace talks. Trump has given Iran two weeks to reach a deal.
Sonny Hostin said she feels “terrible” for hurting the Democratic Party by asking Kamala Harris what she’d do differently from President Biden. Harris famously replied, “nothing,” a moment Hostin admits she knew would go viral and impact the election, despite believing it was a fair question.
Chuck Todd said he believes former President Biden’s team intentionally set him up to fail in last summer’s debate against Trump. On “The Chuck Toddcast,” he claimed the June debate was timed to make Biden look weak and usher a replacement. In another podcast, Todd called Trump the most “unprecedented” historical figure of his lifetime.
Biden visited Galveston, Texas, to mark Juneteenth, the holiday he signed into law, and took jabs at President Trump, saying, “The darkness can hide much but erase nothing.”
