Day 135
Loyalty vs. practicality: How to hire the best
Today’s Big Story…
The White House is defending its merit-based federal hiring plan, rejecting claims that it's a “loyalty test” and rather that it’s a dismissal of DEI mandates.
Leftist critics claim that the new 30-page guidance from the Office of Personnel Management focuses too much on ideology rather than qualifications, such as skills and experience, with some fretting over one particular question on the hiring application: “How would you help advance the President's Executive Orders and policy priorities in this role?”
An OPM official defended the memo, stating that President Trump has legal authority to oversee the executive branch and to ask such questions of potential federal employees. The official emphasized in an Axios report that this does not amount to a loyalty test and that each federal agency will have discretion over how to implement the questions. He emphasized that the merit-based plan is designed to supersede the former method of utilizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion guidelines in federal hiring objectives.
This also comes after the Trump administration refiled a request with the Supreme Court to approve a broad federal workforce reduction plan that was blocked by a district judge. A similar request was withdrawn last month after new lower court rulings. Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued the ruling limits presidential authority and affects 22 federal agencies.
Another Big Story…
President Trump issued a sharp statement following the terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, that left eight people critically injured.
The victims, aged 52 to 88, were participating in a peaceful rally urging the release of hostages held by Hamas. The attacker, 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman—an illegal alien from Egypt—reportedly threw explosives and set the group on fire while shouting “Free Palestine!” Soliman entered the U.S. via Los Angeles in 2022, using a B1/B2 visa during the Biden administration. His authorized stay expired on February 26, 2023, but he remained in the country illegally. Now, many are calling for his deportation.
Trump wrote in his Truth Social post: “Yesterday’s horrific attack in Boulder, Colorado, WILL NOT BE TOLERATED in the United States of America. He came in through Biden’s ridiculous Open Border Policy, which has hurt our Country so badly. He must go out under “TRUMP” Policy. Acts of Terrorism will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law. This is yet another example of why we must keep our Borders SECURE, and deport Illegal, Anti-American Radicals from our Homeland. My heart goes out to the victims of this terrible tragedy, and the Great People of Boulder, Colorado!”

The Administration…
President Trump took to social media to promote his "Big, Beautiful Bill," calling it a path to reverse what he described as "four disastrous years" under President Biden. The House passed the bill in May, and it now awaits action in the Senate. Trump said it includes the largest spending and tax cuts ever, ending taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security for seniors, while boosting U.S. energy production and modernizing air traffic control.
President Trump’s Education Department has designated June as “Title IX Month” to mark the 53rd anniversary of the law. The department plans to spotlight efforts under Trump to protect women’s sports and spaces. The move contrasts with the Biden administration’s “Pride Month” focus on gender identity, critical race theory, and DEI initiatives.
The Kennedy Center began June with family-friendly programming, debuting Angel Studios’ animated film The King of Kings. The film follows a boy’s journey with Jesus and reflects the venue’s ongoing commitment to providing content for all ages.
The Trump administration is pressuring California schools to reject a rule allowing athletes to compete based on gender identity. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon gave over 1,600 CIF member schools until June 9 to confirm in writing they won’t enforce Bylaw 300.D, warning of potential legal consequences. The bylaw requires schools to let students join sports based on their gender identity, regardless of official records.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushed back against CBS anchor Margaret Brennan for her earlier warnings that Trump’s tariffs would raise consumer prices. Bessent dismissed her concerns as “alarmist,” noting inflation had dropped to a four-year low in April despite similar past predictions.
The Trump administration will undo Joe Biden’s ban on oil and gas drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum called the restriction government overreach, stating that Congress intended the reserve to bolster U.S. energy security through responsible development.
Big Lots is reopening 78 stores this week under the Trump economy, months after avoiding bankruptcy. The revived locations will launch across nine states, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Ohio.
Trump Burger, a food chain launched by Lebanese immigrant Roland Beainy in 2020, is expanding in Texas. Inspired by his support for President Trump, Beainy opened the first location in Bellville after moving to the U.S. in 2019. The restaurants feature pro-Trump decor, merchandise, and slogans.
Operation Patriot, the largest ICE operation to date, led to the arrest of 1,461 illegal aliens across Massachusetts, including murderers, rapists, drug traffickers, and child sex predators.
Poland’s presidential runoff delivered a narrow win for the Trump-supporting nationalist, Karol Nawrocki, over pro-EU liberal Rafał Trzaskowski.
Vice President…
JD Vance’s wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his warm hospitality during the Vance family’s visit to India in April. She described meeting Modi as a very special experience and shared that her children saw him as a “grandfather figure.”
Congress…
THE HOUSE
•Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO) attributed the recent Boulder attack to Colorado's "sanctuary state" policies, arguing they hinder cooperation between local and federal law enforcement. He stated that such policies prevent authorities from identifying threats like the suspect, Mohamed Soliman.
Rep. Maxine Waters’ (D-CA) campaign has agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after the FEC found it violated multiple election rules. The commission said her 2020 committee, Citizens for Waters, broke several campaign finance laws.
•Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is vowing again to subpoena Tesla CEO Elon Musk if Democrats regain the House majority, which she believes could happen after the midterms.
THE SENATE
•Senators from both parties are eager to advance a bipartisan Russia sanctions package amid intensifying conflict in Ukraine. The push for tougher sanctions has gained momentum as Trump and his allies, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), adopt a harsher stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.
•Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) reaffirmed his willingness to break with his party during a forum with Republican Sen. Dave McCormick. Fetterman agreed with McCormick on Trump’s approach to Iran and rare earth mineral deals with Ukraine. He also criticized fellow Democrats on Israel, immigration, and took a jab at Senate Leader Chuck Schumer over the government funding fight.
•Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) announced a new PAC, American Mobilization, aimed at opposing President Trump’s agenda. He said the group will back citizen-led protests nationwide.
The Resistance…
Police found paperwork labeled “USAID” in the car of Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who is accused of throwing explosives at protesters in Boulder, Colorado. Soliman’s 2015 silver Prius also contained documents mentioning “Israel” and “Palestine,” along with a red gas can and rags.
CNN is facing backlash after commentator Juliette Kayyem criticized the FBI as “juvenile” for labeling the Colorado firebombing at a pro-Israel rally as terrorism. Kayyem, a national security analyst, challenged FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino’s assessment of the attack.
Additionally, CNN’s lead national security correspondent, Alex Marquardt, announced his departure from the network four months after a defamation case cost CNN at least $5 million. His 2021 report falsely implied Navy veteran Zachary Young profited illegally during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Greta Thunberg is joining a humanitarian mission to Gaza aboard the vessel “Madleen” to deliver aid and protest Israel’s blockade. Her involvement with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition has sparked backlash, with critics accusing her of aligning with Hamas and engaging in virtue signaling.
Despite expectations of a more subdued Pride Month, Major League Baseball is moving forward with widespread LGBTQ celebrations. This June, 29 of the 30 MLB teams—excluding only the Texas Rangers—will host “Pride Night” events at their stadiums.
Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing criticism for excluding funding in his budget for Proposition 36, an anti-crime measure he opposed but voters approved last year. The measure boosts penalties for repeat retail theft and fentanyl dealing, and requires treatment for some nonviolent drug offenders. California’s attorney general recently said he believes it should be funded, breaking with Newsom.
Tulsa’s first Black mayor, Monroe Nichols IV, has proposed a $100 million private trust as part of a reparations effort for the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The trust would fund scholarships and housing for descendants of victims, but would not include direct cash payments.
Former President Bill Clinton said he "never" saw Joe Biden in cognitive decline and believes the president is "in good shape." Promoting his new book The First Gentleman, Clinton responded to claims made in Original Sin, a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper, which alleges Biden’s decline and a cover-up surrounding his re-election decision.
Mark Halperin is urging Democrats to join Republicans in investigating claims that President Biden’s health issues were concealed. He said the inquiry would serve the public interest and help rebuild trust in the Democratic Party, and show a commitment to transparency.
Chuck Todd, now hosting a solo podcast after leaving NBC News, said in a recent interview that his car tires were slashed after President Trump criticized him during his previous term.
Michael Cohen, once Trump’s lawyer and now a major critic, is asking the former president to pardon him for federal crimes, including tax and campaign violations. In an op-ed, Cohen and four other convicted Trump critics argue they were unfairly denied pardons by Joe Biden and urge Trump to reconsider their cases.
