Day 128
Remembering what we fight for
Today’s Big Story…
President Trump delivered a strong Memorial Day address at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring fallen U.S. service members and calling for a renewed commitment to the nation's founding ideals.
He praised the sacrifices of American troops who gave their lives in defense of freedom, describing them as warriors who answered their country’s call and gave everything so others could live free. Trump expressed sorrow for the families of the fallen and gratitude for their service, calling their sacrifices “the ultimate gift.” He pledged to “fix” the republic as it nears its 250th anniversary, urging unity in remembering those who died for the nation.
"At Lexington Green, Concord Bridge, Bunker Hill, brave minutemen and humble farm boys became the first to give their lives for a nation that did not yet have a name," Trump said. "Those young men could never have known what their sacrifice would mean to us, but we certainly know what we owe to them. Their valor gave us the freest, greatest and most noble republic ever to exist on the face of the earth."
Another Big Story…
President Trump announced that he has issued a full and unconditional pardon for Scott Howard Jenkins, the former sheriff of Culpeper County, Virginia, who was sentenced in March to 10 years in prison for accepting more than $75,000 in bribes in exchange for appointing local businessmen as auxiliary deputies.
Jenkins, 53, had planned to appeal the sentence and previously expressed faith that if the president heard his full story—details he claimed were not allowed in court—he would intervene. Trump apparently reviewed the case and acted on that belief.
Supporters of Jenkins, including former FBI agent and Marine John Guandolo, had publicly defended him, claiming he was targeted for opposing Virginia's leadership and for being a strong ally of Trump. Guandolo noted that sheriffs have broad legal authority to deputize individuals. The pardon comes amid conservative media claims that Jenkins was the victim of a political setup, with outlets like "Blue Lives Matter" accusing the prosecution of being unjust and politically motivated.

The Administration…
The Pentagon released a bold new Memorial Day ad featuring President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, promoting efforts to eliminate wokeness in the military. The video, set to dramatic music, shows troops in combat and training, with Trump and Hegseth emphasizing that U.S. forces remain “laser-focused on our mission.”
Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino announced the agency will expand its investigations into several high-profile cases, including the discovery of cocaine at the Biden White House, the leak of the Supreme Court’s draft Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and the pipe bombs found near the DNC and RNC headquarters in Washington, D.C., in January 2021.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, following her visit to Israel, said Iran has only “a matter of days” before President Trump makes a decision on how to respond, not weeks or months.
President Trump announced new action against Harvard University, criticizing its failure to stop pro-Hamas and anti-Israel activism on campus. He proposed pulling $3 billion in grant money from Harvard and redirecting it to trade schools across the U.S.
Social Security has removed 12.3 million people from its records who were listed as 120 years old or older, according to the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The U.S. Department of Transportation is offering a 20% bonus to air traffic controllers who delay retirement, aiming to ease a severe staffing shortage. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the move is part of a larger effort to retain veteran controllers while new ones are trained.
President Trump said that his tariff policy is focused on boosting domestic production of tanks and tech, not T-shirts and sneakers. Speaking in New Jersey, he backed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s recent remark that a booming textile industry isn’t essential for the U.S.
Vice President…
JD Vance spoke at Arlington National Cemetery and delivered a solemn tribute to fallen U.S. service members, emphasizing their humanity and the enduring debt owed to their families. He reflected on the lives of the fallen, stating, "Each life honored here in Arlington was once full of the ordinary moments and quiet dreams of early sunrises, of good days and bad days, of celebrations and disappointments."
Addressing the families of the fallen, he said, "To every child here who misses your dad or your mom, know that your loved one to us is a hero. And though we cannot know your pain, please know that I speak for the entire nation when I say that we are grateful to them and to you for a debt none of us can possibly repay."
Congress…
THE HOUSE
•The House-passed reconciliation bill includes a hidden tobacco tax, despite aiming to cut taxes for all Americans. Buried within the 1,100-page One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the provision adds a tax on tobacco products. President Trump has backed the Senate’s authority to revise the legislation.
•Charles Rangel, a longtime Harlem congressman, died at the age of 94. He began his nearly 50-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1971 and served until retiring in 2017.
•Former New York Rep. Joe Crowley revealed over Memorial Day weekend that his 25-year-old son, Cullen, a Marine and Naval Academy graduate, has died from a rare cancer. Cullen was diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumors just seven months after graduating as a second lieutenant.
THE SENATE
•A House GOP plan to cut billions from SNAP, the nation's largest food aid program, is raising concerns among Senate Republicans. The proposal, part of a broader package tied to Trump’s tax and spending agenda, would shift some SNAP costs to states, which are now fully covered by the federal government.
•Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) urged President Trump to impose sanctions on Russia, saying he's had enough of Vladimir Putin killing innocent people. His call follows Trump’s recent escalation in criticism of Putin.
The Resistance…
In an interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, former FBI Director James Comey criticized the Republican Party, calling it “white supremacist adjacent.” He claimed the party’s cultural direction discourages effective law enforcement.
A new book claims a longtime unnamed aide to Joe Biden admitted insiders felt justified acting “undemocratically” to keep him in office, believing Trump posed an “existential threat” to democracy. The allegation appears in Original Sin, a book by Axios reporter Alex Thompson and CNN’s Jake Tapper.
The book also claims a group of longtime Biden allies, dubbed the “politburo,” quietly took charge as the president’s cognitive health declined. Mike Donilon, Steve Ricchetti, and Bruce Reed were the key decision-makers, working closely with First Lady Jill Biden and at times, Hunter Biden. The book also names Annie Tomasini and former Chief of Staff Ron Klain as occasional participants in running the administration behind the scenes.
During a Q&A at the Australian Real Estate Conference, former Vice President Kamala Harris gave a rambling response when asked about humility. Interviewer John McGrath called her “humble” and asked for advice on staying grounded. Harris replied that she doesn’t “aspire to be humble” or “recommend it,” but still sees it as a necessary quality.
Jussie Smollett has again repeated his discredited claim that he was randomly attacked in Chicago six years ago. In an Instagram post, he accused the city of being part of a conspiracy to discredit him. Smollett originally claimed in 2019 that two MAGA supporters assaulted him and put a noose around his neck, but evidence later showed he had paid two Nigerian men to stage the incident.
Brett Favre believes Netflix is targeting him for supporting President Trump. The streaming platform’s documentary, Untold: The Fall of Favre, focuses on scandals involving his alleged inappropriate messages while with the Jets and his reported role in the Mississippi welfare fraud case.
Critics slammed longtime “60 Minutes” anchor Scott Pelley as “angry” and “unhinged” after he delivered a Trump-focused, fear-filled commencement speech at Wake Forest University. Pelley warned graduates that “insidious fear” is spreading through schools, businesses, and homes.
During the COVID pandemic, over 400,000 people left California, leading to population decline. Now, the state is reporting a population increase, but according to a Wall Street Journal report, the growth is driven almost entirely by immigration.
A Texas rheumatologist, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for defrauding federal health programs of $28 million in a larger $118 million scheme. According to the DOJ, he falsely diagnosed hundreds of healthy patients with rheumatoid arthritis, subjecting them to expensive and sometimes harmful treatments.
