Day 117
Trump ends Middle East tour as SCOTUS begins deliberation on birthright citizenship
Today’s Big Story…
The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a contentious case challenging President Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship for children born to illegal aliens.
The hearing focused on the constitutionality of nationwide injunctions blocking Trump’s order, as well as the interpretation of the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, which grants citizenship to all persons born in the U.S. “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” Justices Clarence Thomas and Amy Coney Barrett appeared to lean toward the Trump administration’s argument, with Thomas questioning the scope of judicial authority and Barrett expressing skepticism about the government’s broad application of citizenship, aligning with Solicitor General D. John Sauer’s push to redefine “jurisdiction” as requiring allegiance through legal residency.
Conversely, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson seemed poised to dissent, with Sotomayor warning that Sauer’s interpretation could force millions to file lawsuits to secure citizenship rights, and Jackson questioning the historical basis of Sauer’s reliance on English legal traditions. A critical moment in the hearing came when Sauer argued that the 14th Amendment does not automatically apply to children of illegal aliens, asserting that the Founding Fathers and Reconstruction-era leaders intended it primarily for the children of freed slaves, not those born to foreigners with no permanent allegiance to the U.S. Sauer further contended that universal birthright citizenship creates national security risks and incentivizes illegal immigration.
On the same day, Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming, “it all started right after the Civil War ended, it had nothing to do with current day Immigration Policy!” while asserting that the U.S. is one of the only countries in the world with birthright citizenship. The hearing revealed deep divisions among the justices.
The outcome of this case could reshape a 150-year-old principle, potentially requiring a constitutional amendment—needing two-thirds support in Congress and approval from three-quarters of state legislatures—to alter birthright citizenship if the court upholds its current interpretation.
Another Big Story…
During his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates, President Trump received the Order of Zayed—the nation’s highest civilian honor—from President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The award, named after the UAE’s founding father, is given to those who significantly advance international relations.
Trump’s UAE stop concluded his Middle East tour, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It was the first visit by a U.S. president to the country since 2008. During the trip, both nations signed key agreements to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and defense.
The UAE committed to a $1.4 trillion investment in the U.S. economy over the next decade, targeting AI, energy, and manufacturing sectors, including funding a new aluminum smelter to nearly double U.S. output. Additionally, the U.S. approved a $1.4 billion arms deal with Abu Dhabi, including CH-47F Chinook helicopters and F-16 fighter jet components. The countries also agreed to deepen military ties through joint training and intelligence sharing.

The Administration…
In addition to the SCOTUS hearing on birthright citizenship, the court also issued an unrelated unanimous ruling on police shootings, emphasizing a “totality of circumstances” standard for excessive force cases.
Former U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said President Trump could be “proved right” if the Supreme Court upholds his move to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens. Such a ruling would overturn the 1898 decision United States v. Wong Kim Ark, which established that the 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.
Jeanine Pirro, former Fox News host and longtime legal figure, has been sworn in as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Appointed by President Trump, she brings experience as a former judge and Westchester County DA. Pirro will now lead federal prosecutions in D.C.
FBI Director Kash Patel issued a strong warning after the bureau foiled an ISIS-linked mass shooting plot targeting a U.S. military base. He said that anyone aiding foreign terrorist groups or attacking U.S. forces will be fully prosecuted.
Deputy COO Franklin J. McIntosh, a top FAA official, revealed that the hotline between the Department of Defense and air traffic controllers at Reagan National Airport has been down since March 2022.
President Trump’s administration has requested over 20,000 National Guard troops to support immigration enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border. The DHS is coordinating the effort to strengthen ICE and CBP operations.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told lawmakers he has asked the FDA to conduct a full review of the abortion pill. The move was praised by pro-life conservatives, who had questioned how the former Democrat would handle abortion, given his past comments calling it a “tragedy” but a “complex” issue.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon questioned Harvard President Alan Garber’s 25% pay cut, saying it doesn’t show real change on antisemitism or racial bias. A Harvard spokesperson said Garber agreed to the cut after the Trump administration slashed $2.2 billion in university funding.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the only way to end the war in Ukraine is with President Trump, whom he called a “lover of peace,” meeting face-to-face with Vladimir Putin. Speaking to Sean Hannity, Rubio echoed Trump’s view that no progress will happen until that meeting occurs.
Tiffany Trump, 31, and husband Michael Boulos, 27, welcomed their first child, a son named Alexander Trump Boulos, on May 15. He is President Trump’s 11th grandchild.
Vice President…
JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both Catholics, will attend the inaugural Mass for Pope Leo XIV—the first U.S.-born pope—on Saturday, May 18, at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019.
Congress…
The House Budget Committee is moving forward with a vote on a major package of President Trump’s legislative priorities, despite opposition from some hard-line conservatives. Speaker Mike Johnson said the committee will meet today to assemble the plan and predicted it will pass.
House Republicans are pushing to block 1.4 million illegal aliens from receiving taxpayer-funded Medicaid. A budget bill provision, approved by the Energy and Commerce Committee, would bar coverage for those who can’t verify citizenship or legal status.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) slammed the GOP’s legislative package backing Trump’s priorities, calling it a “slap in the face” for adding $5 trillion to the debt despite claimed spending cuts by Elon Musk’s DOGE.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized President Trump for backing deals to sell advanced U.S. chip technology to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, accusing him of trading sensitive tech for vague investment promises.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has introduced a bill that could criminalize porn nationwide. The Interstate Obscenity Definition Act would classify all pornography lacking serious value as obscenity, making its distribution or consumption illegal.
The Resistance…
A controversial Instagram post by former FBI Director James Comey sparked backlash after he shared a photo of “86 47” written in the sand, widely interpreted as a call to eliminate Trump, the 47th president. According to Cassell’s Dictionary of Slang, “86” can mean to kill or get rid of.
Bruce Springsteen kicked off his 2025 “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour in Manchester with a sharp critique of President Trump, calling his administration “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous.” He claimed the tour aims to use the power of art to challenge troubling leadership and inspire change.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry will adjust its demands to Ukraine “due to developments on the ground,” after confirming Putin rejected Zelensky’s request for a face-to-face meeting in Turkey.
The Gulf Cartel is sending armed crews into Texas to steal four-door vehicles for smuggling into Mexico to support its paramilitary wing. The cartel is one of six designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration.
Federal agents arrested a South Los Angeles couple, Gustavo Torres, 28, and Kiara Jaime-Flores, 34, for allegedly trying to ram an ICE vehicle. Prosecutors say they drove into oncoming traffic to block an immigration arrest. Both are charged with conspiracy to impede or injure an officer.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom partially blames the state’s $12 billion budget deficit and proposed Medicaid freeze for illegal aliens on what he calls the “Trump Slump.” His unveiled $322 billion budget reflects the financial strain.
CNN dismissed President Trump’s claims about falling grocery prices just weeks before government data showed the sharpest monthly drop in food-at-home costs in nearly five years. April’s CPI revealed a 0.4% decline, with egg prices plunging 12.7%—the biggest one-month drop since 1984.
Providence, Rhode Island, officials have approved flying the Palestinian flag at City Hall.
A Rhode Island federal judge who blocked Trump’s freeze on federal aid is facing a complaint from a conservative legal group, alleging he could personally benefit from his ruling.
During the recent Supreme Court hearing, Chief Justice John Roberts stepped in as Justice Sonia Sotomayor repeatedly interrupted U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer while he was defending Trump’s birthright citizenship order. Sotomayor argued the order conflicts with four prior Supreme Court rulings.
