Day 110
A new leader selected; the world reacts
Today’s Big Story…
President Trump reacted on Truth Social to the selection of the new pope, Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago. Now known as Pope Leo XIV, he is the first American to lead the Catholic Church.
The president wrote: “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
After two days of voting, 133 Catholic cardinals elected the next pope to lead the 1.4 billion-member Roman Catholic Church. Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square cheered as white smoke signaled the decision. The new pope, Leo XIV, is seen as aligned with former Pope Francis on immigration, more moderate on some issues, and firmly opposed to gay marriage. Notably, he is a registered Republican and has voted in GOP primaries, but appears to have opposing positions against Trump and VP Vance. Reactions to his selection have been mixed, worrisome, and cautionary.
EXPOSED: Old tweets from Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, reveal exactly where he stands.
• In 2015, he shared attacks on Trump’s immigration policy
• In 2025, he slammed JD Vance for prioritizing American families
• Repeatedly pushes open-border, globalist rhetoric

Another Big Story…
President Trump announced that the U.S. will sign a trade deal with Britain to strengthen ties and reduce tariffs on British goods.
The pact, in discussion since Trump’s first term, includes expanded market access for U.S. exports like beef and ethanol, though some specifics remain unsettled. The agreement will also roll back tariffs previously imposed on British steel, aluminum, and cars.
U.S. stocks closed higher yesterday after Trump announced a trade deal with the U.K. and expressed optimism about upcoming China talks. The Dow rose 254 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq gained 0.58% and 1.07%. Investors shifted to riskier assets, with bitcoin topping $101,000 and safe-haven assets like gold and bonds declining.

The Administration…
President Trump confirmed he will withdraw Ed Martin’s nomination for D.C.’s top federal prosecutor amid strong Senate opposition over Martin’s support for Jan. 6 defendants.
However, in a major unexpected move, Trump revealed Ed Martin will take a new Justice Department role that doesn’t require Senate confirmation.
Additionally, Trump announced that Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro will serve as interim prosecutor for Washington, D.C.
President Trump also announced he is ending the Biden-era Digital Equity Act, calling it “unconstitutional” and claiming it will save billions. He said he and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick agreed to scrap the 2021 law, which aimed to expand digital access for low-income communities.
In a recent statement, Trump warned both Russia and Ukraine that failure to agree to a 30-day ceasefire could lead to more U.S. sanctions. He urged both sides to respect ongoing negotiations or face consequences.
Trump-appointed CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz is leading a major reform effort for Medicare and Medicaid, aiming to save the U.S. hundreds of billions. He called it a “generational opportunity” to reshape Medicaid.
President Trump has nominated Mary Anne Carter to lead the National Endowment for the Arts, the same role she held from 2019 to 2021 during his first term. She would replace Shelly Lowe, who resigned in March at Trump’s direction, as he moves to slash the agency’s budget.
CNN analyst Harry Enten pointed to an IPSOS poll showing Trump with a +2 approval rating on handling crime, while Biden lagged with a -26 rating in 2024.
The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany have launched a criminal investigation into mortgage fraud allegations against New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump slammed Fed Chair Jerome Powell, calling him “a fool” for not cutting interest rates after the Fed held rates steady. On Truth Social, Trump argued inflation is down, tariffs are boosting revenue, and Powell is wrong to delay action.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump honored military mothers at the White House days ahead of Mother’s Day. The event aligns with the administration’s pro-family efforts, including support for foster care and a proposed “baby bonus.”
Vice President…
JD Vance congratulated the new pope in a post on X. Raised by a Christian grandmother who avoided organized religion, Vance later attended a Pentecostal church with his father and converted to Catholicism in 2019.
Vance wrote: “Congratulations to Leo XIV, the first American Pope, on his election! I’m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!”
"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!"

Congress…
President Trump urged House Speaker Mike Johnson in a private call to include proposals in his agenda package to raise taxes on top earners and close the carried interest loophole, according to GOP sources.
Several moderate Republicans, including Reps. Mike Lawler, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Jen Kiggans, told House leaders they oppose defunding Planned Parenthood through a reconciliation bill.
The Republican-led House passed a bill to formally rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” codifying a prior executive order by President Trump. The measure passed narrowly, 211-206, with all Democrats and one Republican, Rep. Don Bacon, voting against it; it now heads to the Senate.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said he’ll introduce a bill requiring retailers to label price increases caused by Trump’s tariffs.
Senate Democrats boycotted a committee vote to protest the rapid confirmation of Trump’s ambassador nominees, including the controversial pick of Charles Kushner for ambassador to France. Republicans proceeded without them, needing all 12 GOP members to reach a quorum.
A group of mostly Senate Democrats, joined by Republicans Rand Paul and Josh Hawley, blocked the Trump-backed GENIUS Act, a crypto regulation bill. The measure failed to clear a 60-vote threshold, falling short at 48-49.
The Resistance…
Satellite imagery obtained by an opposition group reveals a previously undisclosed Iranian nuclear weapons site in Semnan Province, raising concerns amid ongoing talks with the Trump administration. The NCRI says the 2,500-acre facility is far from Iran’s known nuclear sites and based on intelligence from sources inside the country.
A growing “origin washing” industry on Chinese social media offers to help exporters dodge U.S. tariffs by falsely labeling goods as coming from countries like Vietnam or Thailand.
