Today’s Big Story…

President Trump announced a 100% tariff on foreign-made films, claiming that other countries are luring U.S. filmmakers with financial incentives, causing the American movie industry to decline rapidly. He even labeled the concerning trend a national security issue.

In 2024, more than half of U.S. movies were partly filmed abroad, with over a quarter shot entirely outside the United States. Countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have become popular destinations for film production due to their generous tax credits and well-established infrastructure for moviemaking. For instance, the UK reported a £5.6 billion spend on film and high-end television production in 2024, a 31% increase from the previous year.

Before his inauguration, Trump named actors Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone as special ambassadors to promote business in Hollywood, calling it a “great but very troubled place” in blue-state California.

Another Big Story…

In a Sunday Truth Social post, President Trump proposed rebuilding and reopening Alcatraz to house the nation’s most violent criminals.

The infamous prison, located on a 22-acre island off San Francisco, was once known for being nearly inescapable. Originally a military fort in the 1850s, Alcatraz became a military prison in 1910 and a federal prison in 1934 before closing in 1963 due to high costs and poor conditions. Since the 1970s, it has been a popular tourist site managed by the National Park Service, with ferry tours departing from Fisherman’s Wharf.

The Administration…

  • President Trump confirmed to NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he is not considering a third term in 2028. He named Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio when asked who could become his successor.

  • President Trump also confirmed he won’t lift tariffs on China to force negotiations, defending the tariffs during a Friday interview at Mar-a-Lago.

  • In an interview on “My View with Lara Trump,” Elon Musk said he has no regrets about supporting President Trump or working with DOGE. He called Trump’s victory essential to keeping America strong and reaching “greater heights.” When asked about his legacy, Musk said he hopes to be remembered for advancing civilization and expanding human understanding.

  • President Trump plans to appoint a new national security advisor in about six months, clarifying that Mike Waltz didn’t resign but was promoted to UN ambassador. Trump suggested Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller as a potential replacement.

  • President Trump is pressuring Mexico to permit greater U.S. military involvement against drug cartels, making security a key issue alongside trade and immigration talks. Tensions rose during a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum when Trump urged a leading U.S. military role in fighting fentanyl-producing gangs.

  • President Trump also again floated the idea of using military force to take control of Greenland, citing global security concerns. The Danish territory is valued for its strategic Arctic location.

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned Germany’s domestic spy agency for labeling the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party as “extremist.” Germany’s Verfassungsschutz claimed the AfD aims to undermine democracy. The Trump administration, including Rubio, criticized the move on social media.

  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the Defense Department after an Army helicopter caused two commercial jets to divert during landing at Reagan National Airport.

  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will visit Israel on May 12 ahead of President Trump’s Middle East tour to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. His trip aims to reassure Israeli leaders amid growing tensions with Iran and conflict in Gaza, with meetings planned with Prime Minister Netanyahu.

  • The Justice Department has reached a preliminary settlement with Ashli Babbitt’s family in their $30 million wrongful death lawsuit. Babbitt, a Trump supporter and Air Force veteran, was killed during the January 6, 2021 riot.

  • NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya announced the shutdown of the agency’s final beagle experiment lab, following backlash from the beagle-testing scandal tied to former NIH physician Dr. Anthony Fauci.

  • Kid Rock praised President Trump’s economic policies, calling this the start of America’s “golden age.” Inspired by his Michigan rally, Kid Rock said he plans to boost his stock market investments, confident in Trump’s leadership.

  • President Trump slammed radical judges after a court blocked his administration from using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan gang members. The criticism followed a ruling by U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., a Trump appointee, who said the law doesn't permit such deportations. Trump warned that if judges prevent deporting criminals, “our Country... is finished” and Americans will face a “crime-filled” future.

  • The Army confirmed it will hold a massive military parade on President Trump’s 79th birthday, featuring 6,600 troops, 150 vehicles, and 50 helicopters, as part of its 250th anniversary. The parade is set to run from Arlington to the National Mall.

  • The president posted an AI-generated image of himself as the pope on Truth Social over the weekend, and it has gone viral with various reactions. The White House also posted a picture of Trump holding a lightsaber in honor of May 4th, also known as May the 4th Be With You to Star Wars fans.

Vice President…

JD Vance defended President Trump’s AI-generated image of himself as the pope on Truth Social, calling it a joke. He dismissed criticism from Bill Kristol, who questioned whether Vance supported “mocking the holy father.”

As a general rule, I’m fine with people telling jokes and not fine with people starting stupid wars that kill thousands of my countrymen,” Vance wrote on X.

Congress…

Over 70 House Democrats are urging the Smithsonian inspector general to investigate President Trump’s executive order targeting the museums. They argue the order, which claims the Smithsonian has embraced a “divisive, race-centered ideology,” threatens the institution’s independence.

White House border czar Tom Homan is weighing legal action against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), claiming her “Know Your Rights” webinar—where she advised illegal aliens to demand judicial warrants from ICE—could obstruct immigration enforcement.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized President Trump for saying he’s unsure whether he must uphold the Constitution amid his immigration crackdown, claiming: “This is as un-American as it gets.”

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) predicted a “brutal” confirmation hearing for Mike Waltz, who was removed as national security adviser and nominated as UN ambassador. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Warner referenced Waltz’s ouster over the Signal chat scandal and other internal tensions.

The Resistance…

  1. A federal judge in Idaho blocked parts of House Bill 83, which allows local police to arrest illegal aliens involved in other crimes if suspected of entering the state illegally. Judge Amanda Brailsford, a Biden appointee, issued the injunction against the law passed in March, which also supports federal deportation efforts.

  2. Former First Lady Michelle Obama faced backlash after a podcast clip went viral showing her complaining about White House living costs. On “The Diary of a CEO,” she said while housing is free, food isn’t—prompting criticism online for appearing out of touch.

  3. As Democrats search for a way to counter President Trump, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is emerging as a leading critic and a potential 2028 alternative to the MAGA movement.

  4. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said she never saw signs of mental decline in President Biden during her time in the Oval Office, pushing back on concerns sparked by his debated June 2024 performance.

  5. NPR and PBS leaders confirmed they are considering legal action as President Trump moves to cut their public funding.

  6. David Hogg, DNC vice chair and gun control activist, is fueling internal party tensions with a $20 million plan to unseat ineffective Democratic incumbents in safe blue districts.

  8. A former Georgia Democrat State House candidate who once called for President Trump’s assassination has been arrested in a multi-agency child sex trafficking sting, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

  9. Levita Almuete Ferrer, a 64-year-old former senior budget analyst at the State Department, pleaded guilty to embezzling over $650,000. She wrote 60 checks to herself, totaling $657,347.50, all deposited into her personal accounts.

  10. Transgender swimmer Ana Caldas, 47, won five gold medals in the women’s 45-49 age group at the U.S. Masters Swimming Spring Nationals, dominating events including the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke, freestyle, and 100-yard individual medley.
