Today’s Big Story…

President Trump’s administration released its “skinny” budget blueprint, outlining $1.7 trillion in discretionary spending, with a likely increase in defense funding. The total excludes Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and interest on the debt.

The defense budget is set to surpass $1 trillion for the first time, totaling $1.01 trillion—$892.6 billion in discretionary spending and $119.3 billion in mandatory funds, with another $150 billion expected in a future reconciliation bill. To navigate Congress, the Trump administration aims to present the defense budget as unchanged from 2025, while cutting non-defense discretionary spending to $557 billion—a 22.6% drop—sidestepping the usual demand for equal increases in both areas.

The White House and congressional Republicans plan to seek an additional $150 billion in mandatory defense spending through a reconciliation bill tied to tax cuts. Combined with the skinny budget, this would raise defense spending by about 13.4%, funding a next-gen "Golden Dome" missile defense system, military shipyards, and nuclear deterrent upgrades.

Another Big Story…

President Trump blasted Democrats on Truth Social over a failed new impeachment attempt, calling for their removal from Congress. The effort, led by Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan, collapsed after all four Democrat co-sponsors withdrew, citing a lack of party approval.

FEC records show Rep. Thanedar’s campaign, “Shri for Congress,” is over $730,000 in debt. Thanedar, the Michigan Democrat who filed impeachment articles against President Trump, has a history of other financial controversies. In 2016, The Detroit News reported he was sued for allegedly inflating one of his company’s values before selling it for $20 million. His St. Louis-based chemical firm later collapsed and was liquidated by court order after a lender took him to court.

In his failed 2018 bid for Michigan governor, Thanedar faced backlash after a Huffington Post report revealed disturbing details about his former animal testing lab. In 2010, 170 dogs and monkeys were rescued from AniClin Preclinical Services, a New Jersey lab Thanedar owned through his bankrupt company, Azopharma. After the facility was abandoned, local activists discovered 118 beagles still trapped inside, with workers sneaking in to help them.
