DAY 44: TODAY’S BIG STORY…

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s leading semiconductor producer, announced on Monday a massive $100 billion investment to expand its U.S. manufacturing of chips. The announcement was made alongside President Trump at the White House. This new investment builds on TSMC’s previous $65 billion commitment to construct three factories in Arizona. The company now plans to expand to five advanced fabrication facilities to meet demand for cutting-edge chips critical for AI, defense, and consumer electronics while reducing U.S. reliance on foreign supply chains.

TSMC’s decision marks a shift from its earlier hesitations under the Biden administration, which had pushed for domestic semiconductor investment through the CHIPS Act. During Biden’s tenure, TSMC voiced frustrations over regulatory delays, labor disputes, and insufficient subsidies, stalling progress on its Arizona projects. The company had criticized Biden for slow permitting processes and a lack of clarity on tax incentives, prompting it to scale back earlier commitments.

Under the new Trump administration, TSMC referenced streamlined approvals, enhanced tax breaks, and a business-friendly environment as key reasons for the escalated investment. The $100 billion will fund factory construction, R&D centers, and workforce training programs, creating thousands of high-tech jobs. This deal is a strategic pivot for TSMC, aligning with U.S. goals for onshore critical technology amid escalating tensions with China.

AND HERE’S MORE BIG STORIES…

First Lady Melania Trump spoke on Capitol Hill on combating online abuse and revenge pornography. The First Lady discussed the Take It Down Act, a bipartisan bill by Sens. Ted Cruz (R) and Amy Klobuchar (D), which would criminalize the nonconsensual sharing of intimate images, including AI-generated forgeries. The bill mandates social media platforms remove such content within 48 hours of a victim’s request.

Also: Ukrainian President Zelensky rejected an immediate ceasefire with Russia. Encouraged by European support in London, he insisted the war would continue until sufficient Western security guarantees were secured. He called a peace deal "very far away." Trump responded by condemning Zelensky’s stance as "the worst statement that could have been made" and warning, "America will not put up with it for much longer!" Trump said the U.S. is pausing all aid to Ukraine.

MY OPINION…

The difference between the Biden and Trump presidencies is best illustrated through a visualization: Biden’s most significant strategic plan culminated in a press conference explaining why people had to cling to the wing of a military plane during a botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. With Trump, it’s press conferences announcing multi-billion-dollar A.I. investments. In Biden’s America, the U.S. sent billions of dollars to Iran to help save Iranian-born hostages; in Trump’s America, Zelenskyy is shown the door for demanding hundreds of billions in U.S. grants with nothing productive to show for it.

  • Trump publicly criticized President Reagan's trade policies, claiming Reagan was 'very bad on trade' and allowed many businesses to be adversely affected.

  • In a strategy to bolster domestic agriculture, Trump announced new tariffs on foreign agricultural products set to take effect on April 2nd. This move reflects a continuation of his policy towards protectionism, drawing comparisons to the historical Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930.

  • Federal authorities arrested the alleged leaders of one of the largest U.S. migrant smuggling rings. The criminal network smuggled around 20,000 illegal aliens from 2019 to 2024.

  • President Trump’s cartel crackdown and pressure on Mexico have forced drug lords to scale back operations and lay off workers. A wave of busts and arrests has driven many into hiding as Trump’s policies push Mexico to target illicit drug producers at the southern border.

  • The Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether to block Mexico’s lawsuit against U.S. gun companies over firearms trafficked to drug cartels.

  • Honda will shift Civic hybrid production from Mexico to Indiana in May 2028, aiming for 210,000 units annually. The move is a response to Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports.

  • After firing hundreds of NOAA employees, the Trump administration and DOGE plan to cancel leases on two U.S. weather centers: NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in Maryland, home to the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), and the NWS Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Oklahoma, which maintains the NEXRAD radar network.

  • Kari Lake was sworn in as Senior Advisor at the U.S. Agency for Global Media; she’ll streamline operations overseeing outlets like Voice of America.

  • HHS under Sec. Kennedy is reviewing contracts and moving to replace vaccine advisers.

  • The DOJ will review the conviction of the former clerk of Mesa County, Colo., Tina Peters, who was found guilty of state charges last summer of tampering with voting machines under her control in an attempt to prove that they had been used to rig the 2020 election against President Trump.

  • The DOJ has decided not to release records related to Seth Rich, a DNC staffer murdered in 2016, which were previously anticipated for public disclosure on March 10. The FBI will provide a 'Vaughn Index' explaining what information is being withheld.

  • The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, and General Services Administration announced a full review of Columbia University's federal contracts and grants due to ongoing issues of antisemitism on campus.

  • Elon Musk suggested that President Zelenskyy should be offered amnesty in a neutral country in exchange for a peaceful transition back to democracy.

VICE PRESIDENT…

JD Vance commented to Sean Hannity in an interview about the hectic meeting with Zelenskyy last week: "There was a lack of respect, there was a certain sense of entitlement ... Zelenskyy showed a clear unwillingness to engage in the peace process that President Trump has said is the policy of the American people and their president."

CONGRESS…

The Senate confirmed Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education in a 51-45 vote along party lines. She will lead the department, which Trump plans to largely shut down.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act failed in the Senate after all Dems voted against it. Needing 60 votes, the bill aimed to bar transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports under Title IX but fell short in a 51-45 vote.

Senate Democrats warned of major job cuts at the Social Security Administration, blaming Trump for trying to "destroy" the agency.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy has introduced the 'No Propaganda Act', aimed at stopping federal funding for NPR and PBS, citing their involvement in opinion journalism.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) suggested Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may have violated the law by hosting a webinar on illegal alien rights during deportation encounters.

Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) launched a House Judiciary probe into the DOJ’s decision to drop corruption charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams, alleging they were dropped in exchange for Adams helping implement Trump’s immigration policies.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries responded to accusations from Trump, denying claims that Democrats are using paid protesters at town hall meetings.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) is introducing the GOLDEN AGE ACT to place Trump on the $100 bill.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said he is nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Senator Bernie Sanders publicly criticized Trump's stance on the Ukraine-Russia conflict — the radical politician is calling for continued support for Ukraine.

THE RESISTANCE…

Failed 2024 Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz said he would “certainly consider” a 2028 presidential run, despite his defeat alongside Kamala Harris.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed his willingness to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of a four-point support plan. At a press conference, he stressed that “Europe must do the heavy lifting” in countering Russian aggression.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has threatened to cut off electricity exports to the United States over Trump’s reinstatement of the 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul launched an ad campaign in D.C. and NYC, inviting fired federal workers from DOGE to apply for state jobs. Ads at Union Station and Moynihan Station featured the Statue of Liberty and linked to nearly 2,000 open positions on the New York state website, with the caption: "DOGE said you’re fired? We say you’re hired! New York wants you!"

Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of The View, called the Trump-Zelensky Oval Office meeting one of the “most embarrassing” exchanges she has seen. Social media users responded by mocking Goldberg’s Oscars outfit, claiming it was more embarrassing than the meeting itself.

Republican Assemblyman Bill Essayli and Democrat Kamilah Moore are pushing a reparations-related bill for California. Essayli is proposing the California American Freedmen Affairs Agency to establish genealogy services identifying descendants of slaves. Moore, leader of California’s Reparations Task Force, supports the bill after years of researching slavery’s impact on the state.

Despite U.S. export restrictions, Chinese buyers are obtaining Nvidia’s Blackwell AI chips through third-party entities in Taiwan, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These high-tech chips, vital for AI development, continue to reach China despite U.S. efforts to block access.

During a public rally focused on housing rights, Representative Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) made a controversial remark, questioning Elon Musk's presence in America by telling him to 'go back to South Africa.'

China has suspended imports of U.S. logs starting March 4, 2025, due to the alleged detection of quarantine forest pests like beetles, as announced by the General Administration of Customs of China. China also announced 15 percent tariffs on imports of chicken, wheat, corn and cotton from the United States, as well as 10 percent tariffs on imports of sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

Canada responded to Trump’s tariffs by imposing 25 percent tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods at 12:01 a.m. Eastern but did not specify which products would be affected.
