Tariff Tug’o’war

Hours after President Donald Trump signed executive orders imposing tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, all three nations vowed retaliation.

Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre called the tariffs "unacceptable" and pledged countermeasures targeting U.S. agricultural and automotive exports. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum warned of "serious economic consequences" and announced plans to impose duties on American corn, pork, and industrial goods. And China’s Ministry of Commerce threatened new levies on U.S. technology, soybeans, and aircraft.

The White House defended the decision, arguing it was necessary to protect American manufacturing and jobs from "unfair foreign competition" and to hold countries like Mexico and China accountable for the fentanyl crisis facilitated by cartel trafficking at the southern border. Trump also declared that the U.S. would no longer tolerate "predatory trade practices" and promised further stern trade actions if required.

Economists cautioned that the escalating trade war could disrupt global supply chains and increase consumer prices. U.S. business leaders, particularly in the agriculture and auto sectors, expressed concern over potential losses from retaliatory tariffs. Many Republicans and supporters are backing Trump’s stance on trade, believing it’s time to hold our neighbors and China accountable by prioritizing an America First trade policy.

Most Democrats are attacking Trump, claiming, his tariffs will be a tax on the American people who will now pay more for everyday items. For example, Senator Chuck Schumer held up a can of Corona while telling the press that beer prices will increase. Some Democrats claim the tariffs will put America into a recession.

ALSO…

Mexican Loyalties: A large protest in California turned violent as hundreds waved Mexican flags and vandalized property while blocking traffic. The demonstration, just 15 minutes from the southern border, opposed Trump’s deportation operation. Police intervened as tensions escalated, but many on social media pointed to the irony of protesters praising Mexico and yet choosing to live in the U.S. Other social media users are reaffirming the Trump tariffs on Mexico are indeed necessary.

Profile Picture DML OPINION

In my opinion, the tariffs are great. They need to be worldwide. We have been on the losing side of trade deals, illegal immigration, etc, for a really long time. Trump is taking a stand; tariffs are the way to win the game considering the U.S. consumes more goods than any nation on earth. In short, they need us more than we need them (them, being any nation that does not treat us fairly).

I’ve been waiting for this sort of action for nearly 20 years, dating back to when I first entered the world of politics and covering illegal immigration. This tariff plan is going to work if Trump sticks with it. I support my claim by reminding you of Trump’s first term. Illegal immigration came to a standstill months after he entered office because of his tough rhetoric about deportations and border walls during his campaign. Apprehensions at the border were a mere 15,000 by April 2017. But then he started to talk softly about DACA, offering Democrats a deal to keep young illegals in the country in exchange for border wall funding. This backfired on Trump, resulting in countless caravans of illegals to invade the border. Mexico offered no help until Trump threatened tariffs — suddenly Mexican officials sent troops to their own southern border.

There are countless Democrats and fear-mongering economists who say Trump’s tariffs will harm the American taxpayer — claiming people like you will pay more for everyday items and thus, costing you $1,100 annually. They are lying in the sense they’ve only done half the math. Yes, you will pay a little more for this and that, but the tariffs will STOP the illegal alien invasion! For every illegal who does not cross the border, we save nearly $9,000 annually. Yes, it is true, just one illegal alien costs us $8,776 per year. And then there is the drug epidemic in the U.S., which, all in, costs over $1 trillion per year. If the drug flow stops, or is cut in half, the benefits will be huge on many fronts. I will talk about this extensively this morning on the DML NEWS PODCAST (subscribe for free). Bottom line, the tariffs will save you a fortune not to mention save our country. As for the Corona beer issue, drink Miller Lite instead.

  • The U.S. military launched its first Somalia airstrikes under Trump’s second term, targeting Islamic State operatives. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the strikes, coordinated with Somalia’s government, killed multiple militants.

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino to remove Chinese influence from the Panama Canal or face U.S. retaliation. Mulino complied before the weekend ended, dismantling Chinese control and vowing they would not renew its agreement with China's Belt and Road Initiative.

  • Trump posted on Truth Social that South Africa is confiscating land and targeting white people unjustly and severely, describing it as a massive human rights violation. In response, the U.S. will cut off aid until the targeting of white South Africans ceases. President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who is black, followed up by denying his country had not seized land.

  • Following Venezuela’s release of 6 American hostages, dictator Nicolás Maduro has also agreed to arrange transportation and accept deportees who illegally entered the U.S. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem recently revoked an 18-month amnesty extension for 600,000 Venezuelans, reversing a policy by Alejandro Mayorkas.

  • The Trump administration plans to revoke legal status for many Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan migrants admitted under Biden. The DHS proposal would end the CHNV program, affecting over 530,000 migrants, and place those without asylum, green cards, or TPS into deportation proceedings.

  • Trump fired prosecutors handling Jan. 6 cases and sought FBI agents' names for potential removal, aiming to assert control over federal law enforcement and purge career bureaucrats.

  • The U.S. Army has identified Capt. Rebecca Lobach, 28, as a soldier killed in the Black Hawk collision after initially withholding her name. An aviation officer since 2019, Lobach served as a White House social aide under Biden. She was also a participant in many Gay Pride events.

  • Elon Musk said Mr. Trump believes the U.S. Agency for International Development should be shut down, adding to questions over the future of the government’s lead humanitarian aid agency. On X, Musk wrote, “Did you know that USAID, using YOUR tax dollars, funded bioweapon research, including COVID-19, that killed millions of people?”

  • President Trump amplified his threat to levy tariffs on the European Union. European leaders warned this morning that a trade war with the United States would destabilize economies on both sides of the Atlantic. Asian and European stock markets dropped on Monday as the global fallout from Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China began. In the US, shares were poised to open lower.

THE CRAZY LEFT

  • The Democratic National Committee elected Minnesota party leader Ken Martin as its new chair. Martin previously called for Trump to be tried for treason. Additionally, the DNC has elected Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg to become one of the vice chairs. Hogg has become a notorious advocate for Democrats and their go-to gun control activist.

  • A new Quinnipiac University poll found Americans have a largely unfavorable view of the Democratic Party: 57% of respondents view the Democrats negatively, while 31% view them favorably.

J.D. VANCE

VP Vance defended Trump’s tariffs, writing various X posts explaining how the trade tariffs were a long time coming:

VP Post #1: Mexico sends ton of fentanyl into our country. Canada has seen a massive increase in fentanyl trafficking across its border. There are three ways of stopping this. The first is ask nicely, which we’ve done. It’s gone nowhere. Now we’re on to the consequences phase.

VP Post #2: Spare me the sob story about how Canada is our “best friend.” I love Canada and have many Canadian friends. But is the government meeting their NATO target for military spending? Are they stopping the flow of drugs into our country? I’m sick of being taken advantage of.

VP Post #3: Poor, sad Mexico. International drug cartels operate freely within their borders and Mexico can’t do anything about it. It is “childish, magical” thinking to expect our southern neighbor to have barely functioning law enforcement.

CONGRESS

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is considering a Senate run in Michigan.

Sen. Chuck Schumer was sent a letter of inquiry by the DOJ for his statements in 2022, in which he said the Supreme Court would “pay the price.”

Lawmakers from both parties are preparing to take an active role in investigating the deadly military helicopter and passenger plane collision over the Potomac. Congress will scrutinize Pentagon pilot training and air traffic at Reagan National, potentially leading to legislative reforms.

Senator Todd Young, a member of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, spoke to Elon Musk recently about concerns of Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation as DNI. Musk then retracted his statement of calling Young a “deep state puppet,” and wrote on an X post that Young will be a “great ally in restoring power to the people from the vast, unelected bureaucracy.”
